Question about mini 14 stocks

One question, I noticed on the wood stock versions, there appears to be a large screw in the middle of the receiver area on the stock. Do you know what it's for and why it's absent in the synthetic stocks?
Thanks, John

I believe it is to give added strength to the wood stock in the area of the magazine well and to prevent it from cracking along the grain of the thinner portions. The M-14 wood stock has similar devices.

It holds a insert in the mag well to support the area to keep it from cracking/breaking, not needed on the synthetic stocks.
