Mini 14 ejects shells too far

My Mini 14 ejects maybe 5 out of 20 casings directly into my face as I shoot. The rest go straight up.

Go to perfectunion.com and look for a guy named Walkingbear. He has new gas bushings and the gear to replace them. The gas bushing determines how far the brass goes. kwg

Wow, this thing keeps getting resurrected! Mini-14s are amateurs at slinging spent brass. Try a CETME.

As I stated in the thread for a brass deflector,the rancher with the scope base built in has an ejector designed to eject shells down so they don't hit the scope.Also you can shave the ejector off a little and it will drop the shells just beyond you.I can't find the instructions but I am sure I got them from Ruger.You only take a little off and it is at an angle.But the new ejector will fix the problem and I think it is about $4.+s&h. ,,,sam.

You can get aftermarket smaller diameter gas bushings or an adjustable gas block. I believe Brownell's carries the gas bushings and I can not remember who has the adjustable block but it was the main company that does work on Mini's.

Seems like I heard something about the SIG 556 chucking brass too. Then again, I would rather deal with brass whacking people at the range rather than have it eject weakly, or not at all.

it is much better to have brass flying great distance than finding ones that refuse to fly at all.

The design of the Mini-14 uses a gas bushing in the gas block to pass gas to the piston. The factory part is way oversized for max reliability. I got several for my Mini from Walkingbear. I have found that a .042” bushing works for me. Cuts ejection distance down to 10” or so, and reduces the banging of the op rod. I also use a 1911 style buffer to reduce battering.

when sks's were allowed in aus, i had one, it ejected about 10 feet and annoyed the "real gun" shooters.

I had a smith put a grun screw into the gas reload line and i adjusted it till i was happy then locktited it in.

I installed a 0.040" ID gas bushing in my mini. The 15-20' throw is now approx. 4 feet. The folks at Accuracy systems offer a 0.035" bushing that should drop the brass at your feet if combined with the stiffer recoil spring.

The throw and direction varies depending on series.

The original bushings are just a wide open tube. They just transfer gas and serve to "pin" or locate the gas block on the barrel. The restriction is the much smaller hole in the barrel itself. These barrel ports have gotten smaller I believe in the newer 580 series, but are still excessive for most tastes.

My new 580 series tossed brass only 10' or less, but the shells get smacked by the Op Rod on the way out putting a nice dent in the side of the case. Ruger factory confirmed this is what happens as the shell goes "spin the bottle style" out of the breech. They don't really care about spent brass, just reliability. Not a re-loader friendly system.

That said, I tried a 045 bushing and still dented shells slightly, not much difference in throw. 040 caused fail to eject in the 580 series. Opening the bushing to 042 is just right but probably walking the hairy edge of failure to eject. Cant judge that without a high speed camera.

Does Wolff make different extractor springs for the Mini14? Something to look into. Cheapest way to try, I think instead of messing with the gas system

This ain't nothing !!! My CZ 82 pistol spit's the case's all the way to the Moon !
Out of many rounds fired I've only found 2 case's that hit a wall I was close to...A.H

15ft to the side is normal. Heck, it's a lot better than my Galil, it tosses them about 25-30ft forward and to the side. You see them out of the corner of your eye and distracts you. When at a range I got to go to the far right stall so they don't cross over someone's line of sight.
