Ruger has historically entered already popular product markets, but with something a little better (or a lot better). Many examples are its double action revolvers, single action revolvers, 9mm pistols, double shotguns, in fact, almost everything Ruger sells today, except maybe the Mark I/II/III, the 1022, and the Mini-14 (and probably others I can't think of right now), came out and competed with established competitors' similar products.
Anyway, Ruger has been very successful with this business strategy. So, here we have a truly enormous market already established for the AR-15 type rifle. As in past history, one of the most famous battle rifles becomes one of the most popular civilian arms. Ruger enters this market late, but comes in with a high end product with lots of standard improvements, like its gas piston, chrome plated innards, etc. We say it's too pricey but it's really not. Pricey compared to what? You can't really compare it to a stock, garden variety AR-15 because it's a different animal. It's a classic Ruger business move.
For those who can afford it and see it as what it really is, a step up from your average AR-15, it will be a very successful product. It probably should be compared to the SIGs and FN/FALS, not garden variety AR-15s.
It's good to see Ruger out there competing, rolling out new products, and making money. We want them to prosper.
I'd love to own one of these puppies. It will be a winner.
