| Ruger XGI 308 Semi Auto ?
This came up on another thread the Ruger XGI 308 that never made it to production in the late 80,s I believe. Ads came out in gun magazines but it never made it to production. Although another guy in another forum had one In Alaska!! There was no reason stated why it was just dropped !!! It looked good in the pic , a Mini on steroids!!! |

According to Bill Ruger accuracy, and functioning problems are what shelved the XGI.

Well what a shame!!! You would think research and development would have been good if they put it out in print!!! Also the tooling and dies to make a production run would have been tremendous!! If they have a 762 x 39 it would seem just beef up the gas system and the receiver. What a wast of time and money!!! Now with the M1A past $1600 it would be nice to put it back on the drawing board for a production rifle around a grand or so!! Hey Ruger if you are listening why not try again???????? Look how the new mini is flying off the shelves!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ruger is kinda famous for puting out the word on a new firearm before it is completly finished. I remember a few years back they were going to make a .17HMR,.17M2 single six convertible hunter model, never came to be! I worked on the XGI when I was at Ruger. Problem was a difference in point of impact between manually fed and semi-auto cycled rounds which was about 12 minutes of angle. You could single load and shoot a group, or put the first round from the chamber into the dirt and fire the rest into the group. If you zeroed when single loading, only the first shot would hit the target, all the rest would miss the whole target frame. Otherwise you had to ignore the first shot because it would always mizz, and zero for the rest of the mag only. They went all around the barn on this one trying to fix the problem and couldn't. Then I built a 7.62x39 it worked, so they went with it.

That would have been pretty cool. At least it would have given Springfield Armory a run for its money. Maybe they should try it again. I heard there were reliability issues too in the blued guns. Jim |

The Ruger 10-22 still has that "First Round Flier" problem.....
