I'll believe it when I actually see a number of them in production, Ruger has a rep of putting a gun in advertising and never comes to be!!!

^ With AR type rifles becoming so popular, Ruger will surely put this one out. There's a huge market for it now, so might as well partake in the profits.

^ There's an thread disusing this in detail, but to make a short reply, if its marked 5.56, you can basically use either, but if its marked 223, only use 223.

I've been looking at it and I like it. They have a retail price posted at Ruger's web site and it's a little to rich for me. But I sure would like to have one.

Does anyone know anything about the gas piston they've adapted to it ?

That's too bad for Ruger and what could have been a real revolution in gun buying. I remember many moons ago when Ruger came out with the Mini-14. It was about $160. Almost every federal, state and local law enforcement agency and even some third world armed forces had to have them in large numbers. That's the difference between visionary planning over a period of years, and tomorrow morning's bottom line.

I just have to ask. Will the Ruger SR556 accept standard M-16/AR15 mags, or will Ruger pull another fast one the way they did with the Mini-14 requiring a differently designed magazine. If this rifle is not magazine-compatible with M-16/AR15 rifles, will it at least be magazine-compatible with Ruger’s own Mini-14? Probably not.

There was a little bit in an article in rifle magazine about this rifle. It said that they had already started production I believe. It is an interesting article about the state of the industry, and how all the plants are at peak production and can't keep up with demand.

^^ Our local gun store had one and it's a nice gun (got to handle it right out of the box). Looks like a high quality gun with alot of great features. Don't exactly remember but I'm pretty sure the store manager tested it with standard mags while we were BSing about something and they fit just fine.

Still, I prefer the American made AK-clones and 7.62x39; cheaper and better availability. Also, bulletproof functioning (pardon the pun).

I saw it on guns and ammo t.v. they said it is a standard lower and will accept standard AR mags.

Somehow, I fail to get the two year developement

of a basic design that has been done to death for at least a decade or two.

But, if it turns into a winner in the marketplace, then good for Ruger.

If you buy one and it turns into a winner for you, then good for you.

I doubt it will be anything but a fringe AR, I do believe that it is gas piston and not DI.
