First Time Ruger Owner

I purchased a 10/22 yesterday from Gander Mountain. It is nothing special, just the basic carbine model, but I love it. I haven't had the chance to try it out yet though. I have wanted one of these since I got my first .22 several years ago. Finally decided that enough was enough and went and sold my savage and got the ruger. They only gave me $63 for the savage, which surprised me, but I still got the ruger.

Make sure you trim your toe nails cause you don't want to scratch it when you sleep with it LOL

Congrats and you know it makes you feel good when you finally get what you want.

I couldn't let it go. Last night I watched a movie while holding it in my lap while making sure it wasn't scared. J/K. It is a nice little rifle, and eventually it will probably be modded some, but it will do as a good squirrel and rabbit gun now.

That's funny. I did this swap and it took me 30 minutes and 4 YouTube videos to put the thing back together. I finally figured out how to get the extractor back in by looking at the exploded diagram online.

Yes, I am mechanically inclined. I can build a PC from parts, but this is a whole other thing.

My SIL was over with his tricked out 10/22 the other day. His little black rifle was heavier than my older walnut stocked one, his red dot covered a whole lot of target compared to my 4x multiplex scope, and his 30 round mag tended to stick in the gun. Mine is accurate enough to hunt squirrels taking only head shots. I have one of those action targets that you hit the 4 lower ones and then the upper one to reset. I can usually clean and reset them from 50 yards in no more than 7 shots. He took a lot more than that because the red dot was bigger than the 1" orange dots we had on the black targets.

Bottom line - don't be in a hurry to trick it out. It's a fine shooting gun as is. Anything you do to it to make it look like a mini AR is just money that could have been better spent on practice ammo or another Ruger magazine.

I was the same way when I got mine. I'm with Teach when he says don't go hog wild with the mods. I want to do the bolt release mod and other than a 4X32 BSA scope that's on it now I'm not changing anything else.
Have fun with it they're great rifles.

Just be ready to spend money on all the stuff to make it even better. Because either eventually you will, or, you'll end up buying one with the bells and whistles on it.

Things like a new barrel, an extended magazine lever, trigger, hammer; things like that. lol

Congrats on the 10/22 though. I got one about a year ago and my 15yr, old son and I have had the chance to shoot it. I got and put a Sightron SI series 3-9X40mm scope on it and at 50-75yds. it's perfect. As for 100yds., well, let's just say after shooting it I now don't plan on shooting it at or shooting anything at 100yds. lol Now if I get the new bull barrel, trigger and other stuff for it I'm wanting for it, or if I get one with all the bells and whistles on it that I want or close to it, well, that'll be a different story.

Before long you'll have it tricked out with a bull barrel and you'll do a trigger job and also drill a cleaning hole in the back of the reciever and don't forget a bedding job!!!! Rimfire central has caused me endless hours of working on guns, it's like a sickness. You are warned sir!!!LOL

My 10/22 was my first and still my favorite rifle. I've had mine for probably 20 years now. You'll never see a scope on it, and I've only done a few minor mods. I liked it so much my wife has one too. ;-)

You'll love it. It'll take thousands of rounds and keep right on shootin'.

And please if and when you do some mod's to please don't go down the tactical 10/22 road (unless you like that). The newer models with the plastic trigger housing has the trigger hammer that don't need the shim's,buffing the internals makes it a whole new rifle. But the best has to be the J B weld mod.... WOW did that really change my pattern down range.

I don't plan on going down the tacticool road with it. I don't like the way them stocks look and feel. I probably will put a bull barrel, and a new stock or sand out the barrel channel on the existing stock, bed it, and do some trigger work. Overall the rifle is nice, just wish it would stop raining so I could get out and shoot.

You don't need to spend much money to make your 10/22 a tack driver. Ruger makes a good barrel, it just has a loose chamber so it works with most all ammo. Have the chamber cut to match spec and it may shoot better that a after market barrel. It's less than $100. ALL the other mods you can do yourself, it's not difficult, and requires a minimum of tools.

I've got a "like new one" back in the '80's with the full wood stock. It came with a scope but, I took it off for TruGlo iron sights. I love to shoot it. One of my favorite guns. The only beef I have with it is the trigger is a bit stout. I do plan to get a target trigger kit and maybe the extended bolt handle kit.Only trouble I ever had was some cheep lead nose bullets hanging in my cheep 30 rd clip. Ones with the metal lip at the top never hang with any kind of ammo. A really sweet shooting rifle just like it is.

I thought about tack'n it out but decided not. I'll wait 'til I can get a real AR one day.

I just posted about this on Rimfire Central. I don't know what the problem is, but with the new scope I put on, it's shooting 10" right at 25 yards. ??? I think it's the rail that Ruger shipped with the gun. I'm switching it out for something aftermarket.

hey did you have any luck yet..? I had the same problem, are you trying to use dovetail rings maybe on that factory base ....if so forgetaboutit buy new weaver type rings and start over. Also I hope you counted your clicks when you adjusted the scope..so you can go back the zero set by the factory, makes it a little easier to start from scratch.
