My son said that he bought 44 Mag. Hornady Leverevolution that had a 225 grain bullet. (And I believe that he did) He said that they were very accurate. Now he can't find them anywhere and they are not listed on the Hornady Web Site. As for reloading the .430 dia. 265 gr. FTX, Hornady states that it is for the 444 and will not stabilize in a rifle with a 1:38 twist. ????? http://www.hornady.com/media/ftx_loa...marlin_ftx.pdf The later 444s have a 1:20 twist. I have a 44 mag. that is 1:38. I loaded a few for a test but haven't shot them yet. I tried the 265 FTX in my 50 cal. ML with a 1:38 twist using the green sabots and it shot very poorly. I hope this helps.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I find the Leverlution rounds not as accurate as any of the other 240 grain HP or Jacketed solid points that I've fired from my rifle... The Hornadys are good for 4-5" groups at 100 yards, where almost everthing else I've fired from this gun is good for a 2" group during the same shooting session. Could be my gun?? I dunno, but I can buy a box of 50 Jacketed solid points or HP's for only $5 more than a box of 20 of the Hornadys. Believe me, I've tried to like them because of the style of bullet and the work that Hornady puts into shooting, but the gun doesn't like them. Point of aim is almost 6" different too, so I can't sight the gun in for the Horandys and expect the other rounds to be in the ball park. The gun requires to be sighted in for either, or.. But not even close to both.

the 265 gr jacketed flat points that I load are the "old style" bullets that Hornandy has been making for many years and the load data that I use is from the Hornandy manual. Its been years since I have shot paper with them but they give fine hunting accuracy out of my old Ruger Deer slayer. 100 yds is stretching it with the .44 mag. it becomes a mortar after that.

The LEVERevolution is a great improvement for the 30-30, 35 Rem., etc. but from a ballistic point of view, because of velocity and diameter, I believe the improved ballistics on the 44 mag. would be minimum. After all, I believe that ethical shots with the 44 mag. would be 100 yards at best. Just my opinion.

The ballistic tables show that a gun sighted in a 100 yards only drops 5.5" at 150, but I agree, 100 (or maybe 125 is pretty much the range envelope of the round out of a rifle. If you're hunting woods, with little chance of an open field shot, the .44 rifle would be a great weapon!!

Bought this little rifle in 1974, took more than several deer and a hog with it, my son harvested his 1st deer at the tender age of 9 with it as did his wife taking her 1st deer with it a few years ago. I tried 240 gr winchester and remington flat point factory ammo but settled on a 200 gr Horandy XTP HP in front of 25 grs of H110 handload. It was accurate and deadly. I once took 2 large bucks in 1 afternoon at a measured 140 yds. My 6 year old grandson plans to take his 1st deer this season with it too. By training with the 10 22 its a natural switch. By the way I have shot many 240 gr SWC lubed and hard cast bullets through it and have never had a problem. |

All I was told... No lead bullets as it mucks up the gas system. Not many parts are available as Ruger does not support the gun anymore. Standard/warm factory loads (or better) are recommended for most reliable function. I sold mine as the trigger was a bit tough for my likings...the the guy who bought it, loves it! Very cool carbines!! Mine was a tube fed gun also. Bob |

I have run Federal and Winchester 240gr JHP through mine (my dad just doesn't know that it's mine yet). I had fantastic groups at 100 yds. I also shot through various things just to see what it would do.... Years ago when I snuck the rifle out of dads closet (this is almost 25 years ago) I shot through a 3" steel pipe, a car door, a steel drum and put a 1" dent in a 1/2" steel plate. Another shot went straight through a 4" tree. Those birdshot shells for it are useless though. Accuracy was never a problem. This is by far my favorite deliverer of 240gr of F*** Off....

| 265 gr Hornady 44 bullets.
I have been loading this bullet for my Ruger 77/44 with one hole accuracy at 60 yards. I just got a like new 44 RS carbine and the same load works well in it. I am using 22.5 grains of H 110. Hot, but not in either of my guns.
