| Anyone Fired an SR-556?
If anyone has actually fired an SR-556, other than gun magazine writers, how about giving us a little report here?

I asked the same over in the AR section. All I got was a bunch of I like pie answers. I'm interested about the new one piece bolt and the gas piston system. I saw a short review on Guns & Ammo TV about it, looks nice. Probably a better question over at AR15.com

Is this one related to the MagPul "Masada" model that they sold to someone else for manufacture? The one that looks like what you'd get if an AR had a one night stand with an AK?

Jeff Quinn tested this rifle on his Gun Blast site, and got excellent accuracy results at 100 yards with a high powered variable scope. Here's his data: Ammunition Velocity Group Size Winchester USA 62 FMJ 2879 1.375 Winchester USA 55 FMJ 2858 1.75 Extreme Shock 62 FHVL 2712 1.75 Extreme Shock 55 SRT 2453 1.18 Extreme Shock 100 ASP 1071 Not Tested Black Hills 55 SP 2901 0.75 Wolf Gold Match 75 BTHP 2495 0.875 Mag Tech 55 FMJ 2909 1.18 Buffalo Bore 69 Sierra 2839 0.675 That's more good enough for me! Notice it doesn't matter what the bullet weight was.

Nope!!! Sure would like to!!! Looks like Ruger got a winner from everything I have seen. Their MSRP of $1900 smackers is pretty impressive too. ***************************************************** All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing |

I have one and it sure is sweet. My SR-556 came with a Primary Weapon Systems SC 556 compensator ($100) and all the Ruger goodies for $1500. I have only put 45 rounds through it (no malfunctions) due to the weather. It seems to be a softer recoil than a standard AR-15, as soon as the wind lets up I'll put it on paper. |

It looks like Ruger wants to get a piece of the pie and buys everyone else s components and slaps them together. I would be amazed if they made a single part of that rifle.

Yes I put a hundred or so rounds thru a buddys SR 556 at the range a couple of weeks ago. my over all opinion of the rifle is that it's a winner. super comfortable and the gas piston system worked without a hitch and can be adjusted for heavy or weak ammo loads. We were shooting with iron sights and found It to be as accurate as any other AR type rifle I have tested. If the SR 556 has any flaws at all I didnt notice them other then the price. hope that helps. John |

Massad; has a good thought http://backwoodshome.com/blogs/MassadAyoob/ New Ruger in Hand June 11th, 2009 by Mas As noted here earlier, the rifle is designated SR556, for Sturm, Ruger 5.56 millimeter. It takes standard AR15/M16 magazines, and comes with three of them, produced by Magpul, one of the best makers. It’s the most “vendor-outsourced” firearm this company has ever assembled – really, pretty much everything but the barrel and barrel extension come from outside the factory – but it’s an AR15 clone, after all, and that’s the logical way to make one given the nature of the industry. The trick is to use the best parts. We toured the production cell at the Newport, New Hampshire plant. Ruger’s switchover to “lean manufacturing” has changed the look of the factory dramatically in the last few years. SR556s were literally flowing off the production line. But, enough of that: how does it SHOOT? The subtle feel of the mechanism as it cycles is different from your usual Stoner-type AR15, because the Ruger entry works of a piston design, specifically a proprietary two-piece piston. One of my fellow shooters said, “It feels like a whoosh, not a sproing.” That about describes it, even if it ain’t engineer terminology. My buddy Russ Lary threw a 6.5-20X variable power Leupold Tactical scope onto his T&E SR556, and cranked it all the way up. Twenty power magnification ain’t much for sophisticated bench rest shooters, but for us meat n’ potatoes riflemen, think “Hubble telescope with crosshairs.” At about 100 yards, he found sub-one-inch groups easy, with Match grade 69 grain and 77 grain loads from Black Hills Ammunition shooting the tightest. The piston system does indeed run cool. I could race a pair of 30-round magazines through it as fast as I could pull the trigger, and the carrier (bolt) was still room temperature to the touch. I’m told by folks I trust at Ruger that this thing has gone 20,000 rounds without a malfunction OR a cleaning in factory torture-testing. In the several hundred rounds of 5.56mm and .223 Remington that we’ve run through it, we didn’t have any malfs either. It’s early yet, but I’m likin’ this rifle!
