Scope Mount troubles for an AI

A friend brought me his Sako .223 AI which I assume is a Vixen and the same as the L461. Serial number puts it in the 79/80 year range, no importer marks.

He had as set of Weaver 65/67 mounts (I know, I know, don't need to hear anything about the Weavers) that he wanted installed along with his set of 30mm Warne rings. The Weaver mounts are about ~.300" short of fully sliding on the dovetails. According to an email conversation with Weaver, they should slide on with little effort. I ordered another set of Weaver mounts on the off chance the ones I was provided were out of spec. The result was the same. In addition I also ordered a set of Tally mounts & rings, I've had good experience with Tally, the end result was the same fit issue.

As best I can tell, the mounts are bottoming out the knurled surface of the receiver. If I were to mill out clearance in the mounts, the would probably seat fully. But this isn't the correct solution.

What I'm trying to determine here is exactly what I'm dealing with, why am I encountering the problem and how to solve the mount issue without modifying the gun. I can modify the mounts if neccessary. Remember, I'm dealing with a 30mm scope as well that causes some ring limitations. Thanks for any help in advance.

Have you looked at either Sako or Leupold ring mounts? They should/will fit perfectly.

I have no objection to either, just can't seem to find clear information regarding application. Leupold's application chart is really bad. Do all Sako/Tikka's have same mount dimensions? The Optilocks are near impossible to find but they would be my first choice.

WELCOME to G&G !! If you cannot find something wrong with the receiver, I would break down and order Sako rings and be done with it. They are spendy as well as the Talley's, but I wouldn't want my rings to be the weakest link !!

This link has all the sako rings and a LOT of good info on sizing:
