My son lost my model 99 and I dont know how old it is. It is a .308 and held 5 rounds in its rotary magazine. It also had a counter on the side. The safety slid into the lever. I cant think of anything else that may help identify it. What years could this rifle have been produced? It was in good condition, what could its value be?

My familys Savage 99F (.243 win) has both the lever catch and tang slider safety, the loaded chamber indicator and the round counter window, has factory schnabel forend.
(we believe its a transition model)

From what you described It could be as old as the Korean war. But with out pictures or model numbers....condition etc.. my guess is the value of the rifle to be between 500 to 700 dollars. A LOT of things enter into this value. If it for insurance purposes I would search Gunbroker and find a rifle that seems to fit your rifle and use the sale price of that to judge value. Just a start.

Savage introduced the .308 Winchester cartridge in their Model 99s in 1954/1955 in the Models 99R, 99RS and the 99 EG.

The following year (1956), Savage added the .243 and the .358 Winchester (both cartridges use a .308 case with the neck resized to the caliber in question) in the Models 99R, 99RS, 99EG and, finally to the 99F (1959).

on page 8 of the 1960 July issue of Guns magazine, in Elmer Keith Says column, He relates how the one millionth Savage 99 had both tang and lever safetys the rotary mag and the new Monte Carlo comb butt stock

The Savage 99 had a lever safety right up until 1960 when Savage moved to Westfield and started to produce the A series rifles which had the tang safeties.

I'm afraid to ask but: how did your son "Lose" the rifle?
