Well I picked up three boxes of ammo yesterday for the 340C. Two boxes of remington core-lokt (150gr & 170gr) and a box of the Hornady Lever evolution 160gr. Tomorrow I will test them out hopefully in the morning and get the peep sight dialed in.

Please keep us posted as to accuracy of the new Hornady ammo.I/we tried it in older rifles with slower twist,(as I recall it was the flextip 160gr and the accuracy wasn't equal to the roundnose standard ammo.I have written "probably good enough for hunting, but not beyond range of standard."I also wrote "not worth difference in price". Hope to find more out from you and others. ,,,sam.

Well I had a chance to test the little 340C today (kinda). My range time was cut short by a phone call from my Brother currently in Afganistan.
I was able to shoot 3 5 rounds groups before putting everything away and heading home to take care of things.
Anyways the little carbine is alot of fun to shoot. There is quite a difference in felt recoil between the LeverEvolution ammo and the standard Remington Core-Lokt ammo. All three grouped fairly well for the first time out. I am sure once I get used to shooting it I might be able to improve the groups. For a $100 rifle (excluding peep sight and magazine) I can't expect much more. Now all I need to do is sand out all the surface rust and Rattle can it and it will be good to go. I was thinking of buying a new barrel for it since it has been cut down to 16" but after my range results I may just leave it as is. If I do upgrade to a new barrel I will Ackley-rize it.

That's kinda what it looks like but I was only able to shoot these three groups before packing it in. I want to shoot the rest of the ammo just to see how they are. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if the 170s are the most accurate. I have always been fond of shooting heavy for caliber bullets in everything I own.

Palladin8 you mentioned Ackley Improved. From what I've
heard that is a great idea for the .30-30. I had a Model
340 years ago and thought about having mine Ackleyized.
Tell your brother in Afganistan we're proud of him.

You can "AI"that one without rebarreling. All you do is ream to AI or 40deg shoulder and then fire standard loads to fireform them and get an AI die to reload.Don't know exactly how well that would work with a short barrel tho as the advantage of AI is that you can use a slower burn rate and the short barrel might be too short to utilise the slower burn rate powder. ,,,sam.

Yeah I was kinda thinking the same thing Sam. The barrel might be a little short to take advantage of the Improved chamber. Barrels are only $55 New in box already chambered and threaded in 30-30 so it's not like I would be making a huge purchase. I would think I could have it done for under $200 total. I have heard that the Savage barrels are truely drop in replacement so it shouldn't really need fitting. Would just need to have the front sight mounted.

Any AI rechambering should (Almost must)start with a .060" barrel setback to prevent excessive headspace. It is done on singleshot breakopens and once fireformed the cases are ok but on any threaded barrel you should set the barrel back.If you have a good smith there is no problem, but if anyone says they can do an AI without removing the barrel,be very skeptical. ,,,sam.

Has anybody shot any Horandy LeverEvolution 160gr out of that Savage 340? I shoot it in my 30/30 bolt remington 788. It shoots really nice. Works great if you dont reload, or even if you do, like me.

Thumbs up

they are great little guns. i have one. it was the first gun i have ever had. i got it when i was 11 years old. i am 44 and it shoots like it did straight out of the box. if your daughter is not good with recoil, remington makes 50% reduced recoil ammo. my son has a marlin 30-30 and he uses those. his gun shoots like a .22

The 30-30 caliber would be more than adequate for most any boar out to 150-200yds with the right ammo. As for the little Savage I like mine and don't feel bad if it gets beat up. If you can find one I say pick it up.
