I bought one in 223 about 6 mo ago for around 280. the prices have only been going up. You may have some luck having a responsible adault look on gunbroker.com or such. You may find a slightly used one for around 260. I love my 223 BTW :right:

How does it shoot Jerry? Pretty good? What scope do you have on it? And what do you use it for? Sorry for so many questions, but I would like a .223 also to shoot ground squirrels but I don't want to spend 1000 bucks right now.

| Senior Member ![]() | ![]() It shoots very well. I haven't had a whole lot of time to wring it out. I just handloaded some ammo for it. I'll shoot it and the 700 .308 for the shoot. I'm sorry to say it probably won't put the smack down on the 700. The trigger is a little heavy. It's not the accu trigger like the savage, albeit the Stevens /Pre accu trigger is slightly adjustable. The stock is a little crude in spots (some sharp edges on the edge of the checkering) There is no floor plate on this model. not a biggie, I like to unload the gun by shooting it anyway. The scope is a Simmons (Mead Mfg) prohunter 6x18x40. A bit more sope than I need for the ranges I typicaly shoot, but it's cool & I like it. For less than 400, I'm pretty happy with it. It might be a bit heavy for ground squirrels? Have you looked at a good .17?

That sounds pretty good. I've heard it's pretty nice, for the money. I have a .17HMR but I'm sure you meant .17 centerfire. I'm mainly wanting the .223 because you can get ammo relatively cheap. I don't have the time, or space to reload right now. Someday, but not now. Anyways, my dealer can get me one for 300 out the door, which is not too bad. I think it might even be the one with the scope that comes with it. I'm sure it's crappy. How much was your Simmons? I'll want a nice scope, but not a Leopold. Thanks, Jerry. Sorry for hijacking your thread Younghunter.

I got a bit of a break on the gun and scope. I think theat scope ran around $140 at the time. Iv'e been pretty happy with the Simmons scopes under the production of Mead.

You can find ProHunter scopes on clearance at many places right now for cheap, example: Simmons 6-18x40 ProHunter Rifle Scope Natchez Shooters Supplies Easy to find, if your looking. As for the 200? Keep looking man, you will find them for that price. And keep an eye out in you local trade papers, used Savages are at a decent price. Gander Mountain has specials on them from time to time. |
