| Model 99 358
Guys, Just inhereted my uncles Model 99, 358 Winchester. Checked www.savage99 without much luck. Definitely pre-1960. Serial number 9242xx. The letters SP in a circle on the barrel. Round counter. "Model 99" without any letter suffix, e.g., A. There is however a deeply engraved "U" below the "Model 99". Alaskan A2226 scope. Any help tracking down the history would be appreaciated. Thanks, Jeefr Last edited by Jeefr; 09-23-2007 at 08:45 PM. |

The shell (.358) was first chambered in the 99-R in 1956. Was added to the 99-F in1957 and discontinued in the "F" in 1969. Brought back in 1977 in the Brush gun model 99. discontinued in 1980. Was in some other models but that gives you a time line of sorts. I`d say yours was built somewhere between 1956-69. Others may have more info but maybe this will help in the short haul. There is a Book by Douglas Murray all about the Savage 99. Nothing else. Great reference book for any 99 owner. Gives you every detail you ever wanted to know. Great book! Your 99 in .358, if in good shape, could be worth some money. Lots of 99 fans would give their first born for a good one. Maybe! They don`t make then anymore so hang onto that puppy!! I have several 99`s and others but these are really something else. They are with out a doubt..... American classics, IMO. |

Jeefr, your 99 was made in 1957, should be an "I" and a number stamped on the front of your lever, just above the pivot pin. They were only chambered in the models R, RS, F and the EG in the pre-mil rifles. If I took an educated guess I'd say yours was an F as they're the most common, it will have an F stamped on the side of the barrel beside the 99 marking. If it isn't you've got something even more special than just a 358, an R or an EG would be even more rare, I've only seen one other EG in 358 and maybe 2 R's in 358 in my years of collecting. Good luck. |

Mad Dog, Good call. There's a "7 I" encircled on the lever. Regarding the barrel marking, there's only ... SAVAGE Model 99 U Thanks, Jeff |

Jeff, does it have a schnable forearm or a straight one with a semi beaver tail inletted into the receiver? What does the checkering look like? Is there a hump where your rear sight fits the barrel? |

Mad Dog, I've attached some photos, I hope they post well. They're low quality from my cellphone, but better than words. You can see the checkering. The barrel is smooth and tapered at the rear sight. The forearm fits square against the receiver. Thanks, Jeff |

| Mad Dog, Thanks for the help. Much appreciated. I also inherited a Fox SxS and a Model 70 30-06. Suppose I’ll post questions separately. |

It would take a lot to get me to part with this Savage 99 Series A .358 Winchester. I bought it second hand from a gun dealer maybe 15 years ago. I think the fancy checkered stock is aftermarket. |
