| Great rifles. I own one a 99R 300 savage. Great investment as well. Are you looking to buy one or do you have one and want to learn more about them? Here is a great site to learn more as well. http://www.savage99.com/index.htm

| I need to learn what is worthy and what is worthless. I love the 99's and the rare ones are really cool. problem is I dont know how to identify what is original and what isnt. For instance, I found a 32-40 and when I look on Gun broker and see them for over $1000 and this one is $700 and the guy says its over priced. There is a crack in the forum stock and it LOOKS like the rear site is wrong. |

| ... Your best guess is to ask around on here for people with experience with that particular rifle. You will be amazed at the educated people that will respond to assist you. ... you can find some good deals on GunBroker.com ... but remember that old adage, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

| My question would be why did the sight get changed in the first place. I thought the rear sight on mine was wrong for a while then I found out that it was just not as common as I thought. There is a book by Murray that is dedicated to the savage 99. Great resource. I recommend a copy. As for looking at used savages I am sure there are others more qualified that I and I hope they chime in. I would look for obvious signs of abuse, check for hairline cracks, especially the "savage crack" in the tang. Also look at it and see if it has been reblued or the stock refinished or changed. Does the buttstock and the fore end match in finish and color? Prices seem to be on the rise. I feel they are great investments.
