Savage/Stevens/Western Field .22 model 85

I have a model 85 .22 semi auto. It's an old Western Field. I would like to find out the age. Any ideas? Thanks

I also have a Stevens Model 85 Semi-Auto .22 that my dad just gave me to fix up. I need to buy a magazine, which I have already found, but it seems like there is a piece missing as the little grooved bolt handle moves freely in and out about half a centimeter. This movement is perpendicular to the bolt. ANY idea what I should be looking for???

Could it be for a manual bolt hold open?

That thought did cross my mind, however I couldn't ever decide because I know it is changeable between semi-auto and single shot, so I didnt know how it would keep from catching on semi mode. I haven't tried it though, so you could be right.
And I just remembered that if you pull the bolt all the way open then you can slide it in to another opening which holds it open.

As far as I am aware there should be a light spring in the bolt handle piece to hold it out. Is there not a cut-out in the receiver to lock it into place for single shot operation?

yes, there are two cutouts, and I would assume one is for semi one is for single. maybe these pics will help.

I believe that the first one is the single shot option, locking the bolt from coming back and the other is for locking the bolt open. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

that seems right to me, I havent actually tested it out though. i just cant firgure out how it would operate in semi auto mode without something to keep it from sliding into the notch which keeps it locked.

Oscar Papa, I too have a Model 85 .22 that was my dads and I am trying to restore it also. Mine may be a slightly different version than yours but I took a few pictures of the bolt mechanism that looks alot like yours. There is a small ball detent that holds mine in the open semi-auto position. When in the single shot position it locks in place when pressed in using the same ball detent. Hope the pictures help.

Hmm. That looks helpful indeed. Maybe I can track down a piece that is an acceptable replacement. Thanks for the help.
