| Thinking about a 10-fp I'm selling a set of tires this weekend so I'm gonna have some extra play money. I'm deabatin on three things. A S&W 686, Savage 10fp 308, and a 10fp in 223. If I get one of the savage rifles it will used for target shooting. I want something that I can practice with on a regular basis. I will be shooting at 100,200,300 yards. I would rather the 223 for the low recoil and the cheaper ammo. The 308 for the extended range, and ability to hunt with if I choose to. Will the 223 be able to shoot consistently @ 300 yards or will the wind drift have the bullets flying all over the place?? Also does anyone know of any decent 308 ammo that can be bought for .50 a round??? |

It's a good rifle and I'd put good ammo through it. I won't use anything but good, commercial ammo in 168 grain HPBT in my .308.

| I have a .308 savage 10fp, so does billy and i know another guy that does too! they love theirs, and i love mine. The .308 does have a bit of recoil but its nothing too major. I am 16, 5'10" 130lbs and can take the recoil just fine! Both are fine calibers and the 10FP is an amazing rifle! either way you should be happy. In my opinion id go with the .308, but like mitch said the .223 will do just fine at about 300yards Edit: what i use in .308 is winchester 150gr super X power points, picked up a box of 20 at walmart for $15. Most major gun stores have ferderal on sale for $14.99 (atleast around here they do) mitch-what brand of store bought ammo do you use? Last edited by jv101; 03-22-2008 at 09:58 PM. |

I only use my own loads for the Savage. 168 grain Sierra HPBT at about 2800 fps. Fire formed cases.

| Stop thinking, buy the Savage. My 10FP in 308 shoots .5 MOA with Hornady 168gr BTHP Match. 20 rounds is $24 at Cabelas, but it's worth it. Anytime I shoot anything less than match grade, my groups end up being about 2 MOA.

| Registered User | I've owned my 308 since May 2007 and have shot overlapping groups at 300 yds with 168gr Hornandy BTHP Match Grade (reloads). I love the gun and am now contemplating on upgrading the stock. I also own a 1980 Savage 110 270 that rocks. Lots of deer in the freezer from the 270. You can't go wrong for the price and quality. |

| What would a barely used (I mean it), 10FP with a factory (so I was told) installed HS Precision stock go for used? They are asking $595.

| Does it have the new Detachable Magazine? If not, than that is a moderate price, if it does, Buy Now.

| I believe it has a removable magazine. I really like that rifle, but the 1903 whispers to me every time I visit.

| Yep! But all of mine are shooters. I've liked the 10fp quite some time, and a friend of mine shoots one and loves it. Problem is, I already have a nice shooting 308, and I don't have a 30-06!

| I had forgotten all about this post. Thanks all for your replies. I sold the tires and just happened to stumble across a ss winchester model 70 feather weight with a leupold 3x9vxII 30-06 for sale locally. She is a beauty and I just had to have it. I just love that big ol mauser claw ![]() I'm now back in the market for a 10fp. I think I'm going to go with a .223 in either a ar-15 or the 10fp. I love target shooting and have plenty of big caliber guns. Last edited by Big Tool; 04-20-2008 at 03:16 PM. |
