Stevens 200 review

Hi, I just bought a new Stevens 200 in 308Win. last week and finally had a chance to get it out to the range. I bought this rifle as a bad weather/truck rifle to use when I dont feel like getting my 700BDL all banged up ( yes, I am guilty of babying my Rem. ). I paid $265.00 for it new. I didn't quite know what to expect from this rifle before I shot it because frankly, it seems somewhat cheaply made. Even with the scope mounted, It feels VERY light. The synthetic stock had alot of sharp edges and seams ( I cut my hand on one ). But I was surprised by how well it shot. After sighting it in I was able to consistantly get groups around 2'' from a rest @ 100yds. While it doesn't get as nice groups as my 700BDL ( less than 1'' consistantly ) it is kind of like comparing apples to oranges when you look at their price. Overall I think this rifle is a great value. It may not look nice but it will sure get the job done.

I have a 30-06 and can keep groups about 1.25 @ 100 yds. If I put a good trigger in the rifle, it would be better.

try sharpshooters.com
Don't qoute me on this, but i think they have a very similiar trigger mechianism as the savage and this website has a trigger that make the trigger pull from 8 lbs standard to a 1-3 lb pull.
I have one on my savage 111 30-06, and man did it make a difference. tighter groups and smoother all together. its only like $90 or something like that. hope this helped.

The Stevens rifle is basically the same as the Savage before the accutrigger. The actions, barrels, and parts are all interchangeable.

As far as a good trigger goes, you can spend $80-90 and get one from Sharp Shooter Supply. Fred and Lisa are really good people to deal with. I'm actually gonna call them tomorrow for the same thing. You can also get a Rifle Basix one from Cabelas or Midway.

If you dont want to spend alot of money, and will only be hunting with it, the factory 3 screw trigger is fully adjustable. You can get it down to about 2.5-3 lbs with little trouble. I have a copy of the proper directions to adjust it right from Savage and it is easy, but I dont think I can link it due to me being under 25 posts. If you want to post your email address I can email it to you though. It takes longer to take the stock off then it does to set the trigger.

Hope this helps,
mike

Here is the directions. If it is unreadable try saving the pic to your pc and then print it out. If that dont workI can email it.

I have one and I love it. You can adjust the trigger slightly, which I have done. But a better trigger would make it great. Make sure the action screws are torqued to specs and don't over tighten, or you'll split the plastic finger guard. Good groups!

I bought myself a Stevens .223 as a Christmas Present for myself last December. I wasn't going to spend a lot of money for a rifle to lug around in the snow and dirt varmint hunting. I read the reviews first and there didn't seem to be too many negative comments, so i figured what the heck. It was on sale at Wholesale Sports in Winnipeg for $232.99 so it was easy on the wallet. The first time I took it to the range and got the scope sighted in using factory ammo I was shooting very respectable groups at 100 yds. When I started reloading my own ammo it shot even better, I've been using 36 grain Varmint Grenades with 26.3 grains of Varget and it groups under an inch at 100 yds. A couple of weeks ago I blasted a grapefruit and six eggs at 100 yds, and was seven for seven so for me that is good enough. It may not look like much and maybe I got a good one, but no complaints from this Stevens Customer.

I recieved a 2008 Savage catolog in the mail 2 weeks ago, I was very impressed with what I saw.
They have more rifles and configurations of rifles I've ever seen.

We have an abundance of Coyotes and a Stevens in 223 is on my gun list.

I have a 7mm Mag, and a .22 magnum, and I love them both. I can get 2 inch groups at 150 yards with my 7mag, and it's more than enough for me.

The Stevens is a fine little hunting rifle, although most I have seen will do a lot better than 2" groups.
