stevens model 200 help

purchased a stevens model 200, 30-06 for my son's first gun having a problem with it. when chambering a round from the internal magazine the bolt slides over the top of the round, not chambering anything. lost a trophy deer last season because of having this problem out in the field. by the time he got done screwing around trying to chamber a 2nd round the deer was gone. useing remington express core- lokt ammo wondering if that might be the problem. if switching to a different brand might help.
any suggestions would help

If you take the stock off, does the magbox stat in the stock or stay on the action? I've never heard of it happening with the ones that stay on the action(older model staggerfeed mags), but on the newer style centerfeed mags it sounds almost as if the mag box is sitting too low in the stock, causing it not to feed.
