Hmm it defnately has a counter on the side and I was told that it was bought in the 60's. I don't think that the lever was blued from the factory because i tried to blue a small not so obvious area and the bluing wouldn't even touch it.

Gungee, your gun was made in late 54 or early 55, what is the letter on the front of the lever inside the small circle? Seeing as how the Savage name is on the left hand side of the reciever it was factory D&T'd, not after market. The 99 was factory D&T'd somewhere around the 750,000 mark but I have heard of them under that number. |

If it is the mark I think you are referring to it says L76.

Hmmmm, are you sure that 6 isn't a G? I know it's a small stamp and sometimes they're hard to read. I think you've got the right one. It'll be on the front of the lever, right above the pivot pin, in a circle with a couple numbers. |

Hmm I can't quite tell, I even dug out my magnifying lense and it looks like it could be either. The top half looks like a 6 and the bottom half looks like a G. Judging by what you are saying, it's probably a G. I am however sure of the other 2 characters.

I'm thinking it's 17G as I haven't come across a lever boss stamp over 20 yet, this means it is a 1955 production and you narrowed my numbers down alot with your info on the switch dates from 54 to 55, I owe ya one, thanks alot! Anything else you wanna know? |

Hmm maybe just your opnion on something. Alot of people think that the .300 is to light of a gun to be hunting moose with. What's your opinion on this? My dad has taken 3 moose with it. I have taken 1 my first at that. I think it has mroe to do with your shooting ability more than anything.

To light, my !!!. I just got back from my moose camp, and guess what I took with me out of about 15 99's to pick from? You guessed it, my 99F in 300 Sav. I've got 1899's and 99's in 303 Sav, 300 sav, 250-3000 sav, 284 win,308 win, 38-55 and 32-40's and I always take old faithful with me. Besides certain 30 cal bullets having more speed than the 300 sav, a 180 gr is a 180 gr! When it comes to moose, it's usually 100 yds or less unless your hunting in the Alsakan tundra so as long as you've got some ooomph, who cares! Those other guys that are saying it's to light are picking fly sh*t outta pepper! Where are you from anyways? Canuck, like me? Last edited by Mad Dog; 10-29-2004 at 05:07 PM. |

Canuck and proud of it. Lived in Vancouver area most my life but I did however have good fortune to live in Williams Lake for 6 years. Only reason I'm here is work. When I decide I don't want to work anymore I'm moving up north into the bush.

Woohoo went and blasted off 2 boxes of ammo, impressing myself with how well it shoots. Now I have to re-load all that brass. Do you re-load Mad Dog?

Not for the 300 Savage, I use factory stuff cause my 99F likes it, most of the older stuff I reload though.

Not to get away from the savage rifles but I may have an opportunity to accuire a Parker Hale 30.06. I may have to fork over some $$$ but then I may not have to. If I'm lucky My uncle will give me the rifle like he gave my dad his Sako .308. All I have to do is re-work that UGLY stock and buy a scope.

| New to site
I am new to this site. I have two mdl. 99's that I aquired over twenty years ago. One is a 300 and the other is a 30-30. I was under the impression that the model depended on the caliber. By looking over this site I can see that I was wrong. How can you tell what model rifles I have.

Hi, All! I'm new to the site, and stumbled on it by accident. However, as a proud owner of my Grandfather's Savage 99 (inherited from my father) in Calibre .300 Savage, I just had to sign on! I support PETA: People Eating Tasty Animals George... |

The only 99 I have is my dad's 1953 99EG in .300. It's a little heavy and long for deer hunting in the U.P. but I used it last season. A pleasure to shoot and extremely accurate. Now if Midway will just get some .300 brass in......... mike |
