In the Feb. '05 Field and Stream, Petzel named the Model 99 in the top 50 of "Best guns" at number 35. He went on to write: "I think it is the greatest lever action, period, and at the least, was far, far ahead of any other lever gun. The 99 was strong and sleek."

99`s...........I`ve got (2) both pre-mil. Ones a 99f in .250 and the other is a 99R in .300.
Both shoot well, look great and feel even better. What more can you say!

I've got my dad's 308 99C serial # 1,092,XXX. He reloaded and had it down to 1MOA and carried a cloverleaf he had shot with it. The stock wood is real wavey, I think you call it fiddleback. I once thought there were lots better looking guns, but now it would be the last one I would trade/sell. I think he bought it in the late 60's.

On the left side below the scope mount it says "SAVAGE MODEL 99" then below that it has an upside down E. However if you look on the barrel where it says "HI - PREASSURE STEEL - PROOF TESTED" it then says "MODEL - 99F". Which is it? 99E or 99F? One other thing, my dad says that he thinks the lever action on this rifle never came blued, it was a polished steel from the store. Is that true?
The model 99F was the only 99 that displayed the model on the firearm. The upside down E is only a proof mark. The 99F can also be distinguishe by the raised ring on the barrel where the rear notch is machined foir the open sight. The levers were case-hardened and never blued. I am a Savage lover since age 14 and have collected them all my adult life. The year of the firearm can be ascertained from the book by Murrar, called the Savage 99. It's a great book and I refer to it often. The .300 Savage round was a short action round derived from the .30-06 round. The 99 isa great firearm and I hope you enjoy it as much as I.

When the sibblings sorted out our dad's stuff, I ended up with a Savage 99E lever 308win 20". Cannot find _exactly_ that item in the blue book. Does anyone have an idea what it's worth? It's like new. I don't think he _ever_ hunted with it ... I doubt he fired two dozen rounds ever! The stock is beautifully hand carved in Germany. It has a Berlin scope, and leather-&-nylon strap.

If you own one (pre-mill of course) or what ever number floats your boat, then you are the "lucky" one(s)
The "99" has gone the way of the Buffalo (so to speak.) To own one now
is like owning a piece of gun history.
The Savage 99 aficionado`s know what i mean.

Hello Folks, My first post as I signed up to find out some information on a few firearms I own.

Two pieces that I always wondered about and wish to find a value for are as follows:

a) Older rifle signed as a model 1899, SAV .303 lever action - takes down easily - a little polishing will take out scratches on the left side of the receiver. Still in decent condition, but certainly not mint. Has a safety to deny the lever action
Ser#1120xx

b) Newer, listed as a model 99 series A in CAL.358 - not a fast take down model - but similar to the older version as listed above. Close to New condition - ser#C7176xx

Any info and approx. valuation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

HELLO BRUCE

IM NOT A SAV 99 OWNER BUT I AM AN AVID CARTRIDGE COLLECTOR AND I DO RELOAD.
CARTRIDGES OF THE WORLD SAYS THAT SOME 99's WERE .308 AND OTHERS .310 IT WOULD BE BEST TO TAKE IT TO A GUNSMITH OR IF YOU KNOW HOW TO,HAVE YOUR BORE "SLUGGED" THERE IS A PRODUCT OUT CALLED "QUICK SILVER" IT POURS INTO THE MUZZLE AS A LIQUID AND HARDENS, THEN YOU PUSH IT OUT WITH A WOODEN DOWEL OR OLD CLEANING ROD AND MIC IT, THIS WOULD BE BEST BEFORE STARTING TO RELOAD, IT WOULD BE NICE IF YOUR 99 WAS .308 THERES ALOT BETTER BULLETS IN THAT SIZE < I HAVE A MOSIN NAGANT(T53 CHINESE) I HAD IT SLUGGED BEFORE I STARTRED TO RELOAD FOR IT AND IT TURNED OUT TO HAVE A .307 BORE I WAS PLEASED, MOSINS CAN TEND TO VARY IN BORE DIAMETER, THEY CAN BE AS LARGE AS .312 >> HOPE THIS HELPS> OH I THINK BROWNELLS GUNSMITHING SUPPY MAY HAVE QUICK SILVER > YOUR FRIEND JOE

Talking I'm new here and I have a 1899 question

Howdy
I'm new to the forum and need some assistance with respect to an 1899 .303 savage.
Some history:
I inherited this 1899 from my father-in-law when he passed away. It was his father's rifle and appears to have been made 1908/09 (serial number is 933XX). I've shot it a couple of times - it's accurate out to the limit of our 300 yd. rifle range - and have reloaded approx. 250 rounds for it.
The blueing is in very good / excellent condition but the forestock is missing some wood along the left hand edge, and my father-in-law engraved his Driver's Licence number on the barrel and receiver.
My concern is: should I keep shooting the old girl, or clean her up and put her away ? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
