Gun Identification

I recently acquired a savage model 99 rifle from my grandpa. I need some information on it. The serial number is 539509. Also it has an elk carved into the stock. It also has checkering on the grip and the forarm. It is chambered in .300.

what do you want to know

Your grandpa's gun was made in 1950. The elk carving isn't factory. You've got one of the slickest hunting rifles ever made. Light, ballanced, powerful and accurate. Mine was made in 1941 and shoots 2" groups with iron sights at 1oo yds using Remington 150 gr. loads. I'm working on some handloads with Nosler Ballistic tip 150's. Haven't shot them yet though. Good luck with it.

I'm new to guns in general and this gun in particular and would like to hear from other owners and learn all I can.
Is this a good "deer gun"?
Thanks!
Safe Shooting,

The 243 win will take down a deer no problem, its a fast flat shooting bullet. I have the 99 in the 308 cal and took an elk down easy.

Hello everyone!!! My wife's grandfather passed away a few years ago and I was lucky enough to get his savage 99 lever action .308. However, shortly after the first hunting season...I discovered the shell ejector on the action was worn down and doesn't eject the shell from the barrel chamber. Where in the world do I get another part? This is one fine shooting rifle. Is it really worth fixing?

New member with Savage 99

Hi,
I just acquired a Savage 99 in .300 Savage. It's the third one I've owned and I plan on keeping this one.
The gun is 100% original but I cannot find any letters on it. Maybe it's a plain old 99. It has a 24" barrel with Schnabel forend.

Upon removing the scope I discovered that the rear scope mount was machined improperly or at the wrong angle. I'm going to try some emery cloth and a dowel to level the rear mount to the front one.

I would have preferred a model with a tang safety but this rifle was too good to pass up.

Sound like it might be an EG schnoble forestock. Drilling and tapping doesn't sound factory. Are the front holes through the 99 savage or is it off to the left?

Savage 99 reply

Unfortunately. somebody drilled the receiver, compromising an otherwise collectable rifle. I do plan to hunt with it. The mounting job was less than professional, a problem I'll have to address.

My first 99 was a 99F in .308. At the time, I was an impressionable teenager and I hunted with my father's friends, older men whom I was certain knew all there was to know about guns and hunting. When they told me that my gun was hopelessly outclassed by their .270 turnbolts, I lost confidence in the 99F and sold it, buying an FN Mauser bolt gun in .30-06. And this was in the east where you were lucky to get shots much beyond 75 yards. What I do remember about this gun was that as an inexperienced teenager, this rifle tended to kill at both ends.

My second 99 was also a 99F in .243. I sold this one when I couldn't get it to group tighter than 2.5-3" across the 100-yard bench. At the time I had a Sako Forrester in .243 that generally shot three rounds into 3/4". You might say I was spoiled.

I stumbled into the previously described 99 in 300 Savage just two days ago. My gunsmith, a highly competent guy whom I've known most of my life, examined it. In order to install a one-piece base and to fix the butchery done by whoever drilled and tapped it, the existing holes must be tig-welded and the receiver re-drilled for a one-piece mount.

Joe, if the gun has the original case and is in fairly good condition it'll go $1500 easy.

Did it have a 410 barrel as well in the case? If not I'd be tearing apart the walls in your wife's great grandfathers old homestead.

savage 99 in 250-3000

ive been thinking of obtaining a rifle in 250 savage for a while now, and was originally looking for a bolt action rifle with a removable magazine, since i live in california where we are blessed with many rules that i will not burden you with too much..... so far i have seen 2 savage 99's ..... both takedowns with +/- 188--- serial numbers..... ive always thought that the 99 was a really sexy looking rifle and i am now being tempted to buy..... im trying to not make any overly hasty decisions, but i'm starting to wonder ...... well..... Dear Abby, is it God whispering in my ear, or is it.................someone else....... ?

Looking at 1917 date of manufacture or maybe late 1916 depending on how much -188,xxx. The only model available would be the 1899 250-3000 which would later be replaced by the 99G. This model is the only one ever produced with a cross hatch pattern on the trigger. With condition these are quite desirable rifles!

Hi Fellow 99ers,

I have a quick question...I have a 99R in 300. My rifle has the typical hairline savage crack behind the tang. This crack is about 1 1/2 inches long. My concern is that if I shoot this fine weapon the crack may get worse. Is this correct? Or can I shoot the weapon and have fun.
Tex
