One is a 99F with a serial # of 1083***(past the million mark) which places the build somewhere in the 60's I suppose. I was considering selling it because it doesn't fit in with my current interests. The overall condition of the rifle approaches 98%. Caliber 308. The one negative, and it really drives me crazy when people do this, is my father in law stenciling his drivers licensing number upon the lever arc which inserts into the receiver after cocking the lever. Double-drives me crazy because the entire lever mechanism is beautifully case hardened! Anyway, can anyone advise me as to a fair market value of this rifle for gun show or ebay sales? Like I said, prices are all over the map and yes, I realize that the stencil will drop the value. Thank you. | The current Blue Book Value is around 500.00 considering the Stenciled number and condition overall...maybe 550.00.
E-Bay does not allow guns...

Thanks. I'll give it a shot.
Thanks Mooseman 684. Stupid me about ebay.Long day. I usually do Guns America (purchases, I've never sold anything on it) but I wasn't sure about the fair price. I need to get a copy of the Blue Book for the stuff I'm not familiar with.
I guess I lucked out on this one. A collector placed an ad in my local paper that he was looking for 99F's in 95% or better condition. I met with him and he offered me $600.00 for the one I had. After the deal was done he told me(probably rubbing it in)if the stencil had not been inscribed, the rifle would have been worth $800.00. It really was like new. A good lesson to pass on: Don't inscribe or customize or otherwise screw around with any potentially valuable firearm until you have completely researched it.

| Savage 99 Cresant Butt Plate. Greetings Brothers: I bought a vintage Sav 99 at a gun show, pre 1926. Good condition, shoots great, but has non standard furnature on it, I have ordered new repo straight grip butt stock and a Schanable tiped fore end from "Gunstocksinc." So now I need a Cresant Butt Plate. Anyone know where I can find one? Numrich has a repo for the Winchester 86, can that be adaptered? Also, I am looking for reloading info. Since I can use pointy bullets in the Savages' rotory magazine, who makes a 165-8 gr bullet that will fit? Cheers, Tony O^Ng CO.p |

| Savage 99 bits and pieces.
Greetings Savparts: I realize that your post is a couple three years old, but in the event that you haven't passed. Here are a few things that I need. 1ea. Curved Butt plate for a new crescent Peach belly straight Butt srock. This is for a Vintage '99 in 30-30 cal. (pre 1926).
I need the pistol grip cap for a '99 j (1956).
I looking at the photos of a Mod.99 Crescent butt stock it looks like Numrich's Win-86 repo ought to work out??
What do you think?
Cheers, Tony O^Ng CO.p

Savparts (Steve) sold his business about 2 years ago but I still talk to him a couple times a week. If you need to get ahold of him you can still find him on Ebay but he's just getting rid of some leftover small stuff. He sold the majority of his shop to Numrichs when he closed up.

Thanks Mad Dog for SAVPARTS info.
I guess that I'll just go for Numrichs Win 86 repo. Looks big enough and is the same desigb.
I've cheched eBay, lots of nice Sav. Butt plates but no crescent.

| Creascent buttplates Big Dave: Well that's the answer that came back from Gunstocks.Inc. So I'm still looking. What about Dixie Gun Works?? They have a multitude of different Creascent butt plates for Black Powder smoke poles. They don't give demintions. Measuring on the back inside curve my stock is 4.25 " The top is 1.25", the width is 1.5". There are a couple that look like they'd fit, but don't show how wide. Tony O^Ng CO.p |

This gentlemen, is the truth. I am trying to help a widow friend of ours sell her husband's gun collection and I need some help determing the value of a Savage 99. It was manufactured in 1937-38. It has a 24" barrel, schnabel fore end, pistol grip, curved steel buttplate, no checkering, the feeding rail appears to be brass, the lever is case color, it is in mint condition with the original box. Can anyone give me some help with this one?
Thanks-

I forgot to mention; it is chambered in 300 Savage. Bore is excellent.

From the discription it sounds like an early 99EG. The box should have the serial number and the model. From what I have seen they have been listed between $800 (honest used rifle) to $1,800 NIB. Not saying that is what they have been selling for, just what I have seen them listed on the auction sites. High condition rifles with paper work (hang tags and original boxes) will sell easy and for a premium. Without pictures it is hard to give an exact amount. Rifles that sell for less than $800 will normally have aftermarket modifications, drilling and tapping, butt pads, or sling studs. I hope this helps.

Thanks 99trix. I have done some more research since my post and I think you're right. The box is orginal but the label is so faded it is not legible. I believe it is a honest $900 rifle. I am doing this just as a friend and I want her to get a fair price for it. Taking it to a gun show tomorrow to see if I can stir some interest. Thanks again.

| detachable box magazine 99C series A?
I bought a Model 99C (series A according to barrel markings) in .243 Winchester for my wife about 10 years ago. I have looked at gun shows for a spare detachable box magazine for it with no luck. Any ideas on parts/suppliers that might be a source for one? The rifle came with one and it works fine, just would like to have a "spare". Any help appreciated. |

Ive got a 99 with the shnabel forend and cartridge counter in 300 Savage. When I shoot factory ammo the primers back out about .015 or so from the case. Do you say that would be a bolt problem or barrel problem? I'm sure Savage wouldnt want to fix it and there are hardly any gunsmiths left around here anymore. Where can a guy get something as old as this fixed properly?

I to have a Sav. 99 take down in 250-3000 I had Wayne Umberger bead blast and parkerized it black , mounted a Nikon buckmaster on leopold mt and had swing swivels installed cost $500 for the wk not counting parts but it looks and shoots great, Checking with an old Nvy biddy in NC he reccommended barnes triple X in 90 grs the gun does have the 1X14 in twist. Oh yes i had the old stocks duplicated by someone in Illinois, My hunt club just north of memphis in the Mississippe river bottoms hosts deer, cyotes, bob cats and armadillas so i should have plenty of targets, i will load 75 gr for the varmits.

I posted on this board before the big change. I guy wrote me that the 99 has a reputation for being a straight shooter. Mine is a lever action in .243 Win. I think it holds a max. of 6 rounds. I'm new to guns in general and this gun in particular and would like to hear from other owners and learn all I can.
Is this a good "deer gun"?
Thanks!
Safe Shooting,
Shane | Shane;
I have a 99e in .308, and the HUGE problem with these is the dum-dum who tries to put a scope on them. Arthur Savage designed this little jewell with iron sights and a 'classic comb' stock. Scopes raise your mug off the stock so high it kicks you in the face. I machined a little sight block out of aluminum to mount a Williams hunter peep sight (without the knobs) and this thing hammers! It seems like it was designed for a good tang or rear peepsight. Almost no recoil, and shoots straight.
We tried to find any 'monte carlo' buttstock that would raise your face up to a scope, but it seems none are available anywhere, so we went with peepsights. I also put a full length Mannlicher forend on my 20" carbine version, and it is now the neatest little carbine for carrying around. Best carbine I ever had.
