Savage 99 Carrier

Does anyone have a Carrier Spool in 250-3000 for an old takedown 99, 1928 vintage, that they wish to sell?
You are welcome to contact me at: amreb@bellsouth.net
Thank you

manufacture date of my 300 savage

Hello all, I was recently given a 300 savage that was my grandpa's. It doesn't have much for specifics, but does appear to be a 99. It has a bullet counter and a lever action with the safety on the lever. The serial number is 6298**. Any idea when this was manufactured?

thank you,

Sounds like an early 50s model. I have a 99R with the same range serial and I understand it was manufactured around 52 or53.

99E .308 free bore?

How much free bore should a 99E in .308 have? I've been told none, but I haven't been able to confirm that. Mine looks to have about 3/16 or more".

Thanks

Well, I just purchased my first 99. Since I have a C&R, I found an older model made in 1927. It is a takedown model with a 20" barrel in .30-30. It is in solid shape. I just need to find a tang sight for it and then she will be ready to shoot.

My 99E in .308 has no "free bore" . this is usually done by a gunsmith so people who reload can make a hotter round by not seating the bullet as deep in the case, allowing more powder room to make a Magnum type round.

That's what I was afraid of. It appears to me that I have purchased someone's "project gun", not the good 'ol rock solid 99 I was hoping for. Whether it's the free bore, or some other attempt to improve on the the design, the accuracy is not up to standard on this rifle. More like a pattern than a group.

Is there anywhere to get replacement barrels?

Newbie

Hello to all of you 99 fans! I'm new to this forum.I got a 99 featherweight in 303 this year. I have loaded up some 173 gr. round nose cast bullets. Standing unsupported at 100 yards I can put them into a ten inch disk. My plan for this year's deer season is to get a deer with the above rifle and load.Ladies, and Gentlemen... your comments on the above please.

Sounds like a plan! Let see some pictures of the game take with the old girl. Good to hear another one will be back on the hunt. Plenty of game has been taken with the 303 sav. Good luck!

Will Do, I had plans on using my 99A in .250 but I've always wanted a 303 and this one is more than I'd hoped for. It's a take down model with a 22" barrel, pistol grip, and a nice schnabel end. It shoots great with .309 cast bullets.More important than the Rifle, will be shot placement of the round. Worse case situation would be a bad hit and not recover the Buck.... it has to be a Buck!! I f the shot isn't good or it's a Doe I'll let it go and hope for better. I couldn't sleep at night knowing I wounded a Deer just because I wanted to take one with a cast bullet and didn't make a kill shot on the first round. Speaking of cast bullets, does anyone hunt Deer with them in the Northeast?

Big Fritz

I have a model 99 in a 300. It's already drilled and tapped for a one piece scope base. The hole dimensions are .750" between the front two holes, 3.85" from the back hole to the middle hole and an overall length of 4.60" from the back hole to the front hole.....Does anyone know (for sure) what one piece base should match up?

A Redfield Jr or Sr will work, also the Leupold one piece bases will work as well.

Thanks Mad Dog. I appreciate the response......Just found out today that although Leupold bought the Redfield name, Weaver distributes the Redfield line now and according to them, those bases are no longer available unless a private party has one. I bought the Leupold base but the holes don't even come close to matching up. Also bought the Weaver two piece, 10 and 14, they don't match up either because the cocking indicator is in the way. Went to the recent gun show and I had no luck. A local gunsmith told me for $135.00 he make a custom base for me......might be my last option.

How much does the cocking indicator interfere with the base? I had one that was aftermarked drilled and tapped that the cocking indicator would have been half covered by the back weaver base. So I took a file to it and carefully removed about an 1/8" off the back side. The weaver bases are painted aluminium so I just repainted it and it worked perfect.

Good copper fouling cleaner?

Any recommendations for a good copper fouling cleaner for my 99?

I've tried 2 applications of Hoppe's Copper Eliminator, and didn't seem to do much at all.

FYI, It's a 99 EG from 1953--bought it last year (as some of you know) and it was copper fouled then too so it's been in there for who knows how long

On the other hand it shoots great already--3/4" at 50 yds and 1.25 to 1.5 at 100 (with Simmons 3X9X32mm--scope blasphemy I know, but it was already D&T)
Or, should I just leave it alone?
I definitely DON'T want to use anything that will harm the bore or bluing with handling.
PS--bore is pristine other than the copper fouling

I've been lurking for a while--nice to see Mad Dog and some others on this site

Get yourself the book "The Ninety-Nine" by Doug Murray. It is not a simple answer. There are 3 different versions of a 99F all completely different. This is the bible for savage collectors. Although it is not 100% accurate, it is the best that is out there.

I aquired my 99 in .300 Savage from my father who shot plenty of whitetail deer with it. I love the way it balances in my hand for carrying. It lines up perfect for snap shooting also. Not sure which letter it is but it has the shnabble fore end and brass cartridge counter. My dad had it drilled and tapped for scope so its ready to hunt anywhere. Love it for deer hunting!!
