Production began in the fifties, as a low-priced 'entry-level' hunting rifle. It was discontinued in 1985, with several variants having been made, including .22 Hornet, .222 and .223 Rem, .225 Winchester and the .30-30Win. With the unique bolt-style, an off-set scope mount is required. Earlier versions of this limited the size of the scope bell, but a newer mount is available that is taller, allowing more scope choice. Another limitation is the magazine is long enough for the common flat-point loads used in the lever rifles, but if pointed bullets ar desired, they are limited to 110 grain or less. I find that the 150 grain spire-point loads don't fit the magazine of my rifle! I am planning to start loading the 110's, for a flatter-shooting varmint popper. I like the M340 - the stock design seems to give less felt recoil than my Marlin 336 lever rifle in .30-30. It has a quaint charm, and is still a good deer rifle! Valuewise, they seem to hover around $300 to $500 on the various gun auction sites - depends on the seller, and what the buyer will pay. I paid $250 for mine in a local gun&pawnshop. The .30-30 seems the most common, with the other calibers commanding higher prices.

thanks for the reply Bull Dog, thats a bit of a help, I believe he bought it in the early 70's from another estate sale in virginia. So prob. produced in the 60's.I have only been to the range with it, as in new jersey you can not hunt in the southern part of the state with a rifle.
