12 gauge

I am looking into getting a 12 gauge. I was thinking about a remington 870 pump action. I want all black for the finish. Looks like a reasonable price. Is there anything better out there for the quality and the price??

You have the Mossberg (500/590 series) who, in my opinion, is the best shotgun on the market.

There is Savage/Stevens (Model 350) who make great shooters.

You don't say whether you want it for hunting or defense.

The 870 is a great shotgun but price being a concern, and Remington quality has seemed to wane some in the past few years. I'd take a serious look at the two mentioned here...very much less expensive and the quality is there.

Take a look at the H&R Partner Pump. I have sold several and have got nothing but positive feed back. My brother bought one and I took it a part. It looks like the parts are interchangeable with the 870. It is hard to bet for the money!!!

Lots of slightly used Remington 870's out there

A Remington 870 will outlast your lifetime unless you deliberately abuse or neglect it. It is not difficult to find a slightly used 870 for sale. There are numerous barrel configurations for this shotgun. I have one for home defense.

Just take some time to look around and you can find a great price on this shotgun.

Once you have the shotgun you can move forward with finishes of your choice.

Nail on the head, old buddy.

In my opinion, research, and experience, Mossberg makes the most dependable pump shotguns on the market, and at half the price of a comparable Remington.

I love my Winchester Ranger 120, but I bought it over 20 years ago. Took a lot of shots through it and still shoots well.

I'd trade it for my older brother's 870 Wingmaster Magnum he bought at the same time though, but nothing else.

All good shotguns, pricing could be an option. I personally like the Remington and Mossberg, I have one of each and I trust them.

Never met a shotgun I didnt like. Either Mossberg or a good Remmington is a fine choice. The NEF Pardner pump is another good choice. You will have to go to a good gunshop and handle a few and see what you personally like. I have about 18 shotguns now and I like em all.
I do like the 870 a little better because it is so much easier to take down to clean or repair. You only have to drift out 3 pins and you basicly have it apart.

Let us know what you decide, and why, would you?

The all black 870 is the third from the top.

I see alot of 870's and Mossberg 500's at work. I also own an 870 Express in 20 gauge. Both are reliable and durable. The only problem I have seen is an ammo issue and not the gun. The Mossberg's seem to hate the Winchester Universal shells (Wal-mart value pack). I have seen more problems with the Mossberg/Winchester Universal combination. If you go with the Mossberg just use any ammo besides the Winchesters.
