| Wal-Mart Shotguns
Just curious about your guys experience with Wal-Mart shotguns. Some of of the Wal-Mart brands that I am familiar with are New England Arms, and H&R. I'm trying not to be hypnotized by a cheap price($94), but I've heard good things, and my brother had one, as well as my father, who had his for over 20 years (before my brother sawed the barrel off). The ones in question are manufactured by New England Arms; 12 gauge single-shot, break open with a 28 inch barrel, or a 20 gauge single-shot, break open with a 26 inch barrel. I think its time for a shotgun; I'm getting sick of seeing them at the range, wishing I had one. At the same time, I don't want to put a dent in my pocket book, although thats violating rule number one when commiting to the collection of firearms. Any tips/advice from prior experience would be greatly appreciated, Thanks a bunch guys, Jeff Buck

Hey, if you want it, go for it. It is what it is. I've been tempted by these things before. I want a 20GA and the local Big 5 (a sporting goods store) had single shots for 69 bucks! I shoulda bought one just for the heck of it. I don't know if they carry them anymore and our Wally's don't carry guns anymore. And I can't bring myself to go into a 'real' gunshop and ask for one of these. I also have to say that you might be able to get something a little better for a little bit more money. I do have a Mossberg 500 with a 28 inch barrel and a 18.5 inch barrel, that only cost $250 out the door, at the same big 5. I know it's not the fanciest or most expensive but it works great for me. |

A lot of people will tell you not to buy your weapons at Wally World, and they do make some very good points. But one thing that I do like about Walmart is the price of some items, and weapons are one of them. I have bought 3 weapons from Walmart over the years. 1 rifle and 2 shotguns. Winchester and Remington brands. Again price was the deciding factor. One thing to check on is to see if this is a "Walmart Special". With their buying power they can request that something be made without certin features. Therfore they can buy & sell it cheaper. Although I have only had a problem with their electronic specials, and not their guns. If you like the weapon in question and it is a reasonable price, and you see nothing physically wrong with the weapon then I say go for it. If you do be prepared to be treated differently while you exit the store. But just for spite buy some ammo at the same time you get the gun.

Last time a bought a weapon at Wally World (a shotgun), I was told in no uncertain terms that I could not buy Ammo at the same time.

Here, you can get the gun and ammo at the same time - but they have to be rung up on the POS terminal on separate tickets. The 'puter won't allow both together. Some stores insist on not allowing the customer to take both at once - though since the manager carries the gun to your car, this isn't necessary. The NEF and H&R are pretty much the same gun - both are under Marlin and use the same design. Good guns, though I like the ergonomics of the Rossi single-shot better. Being able to have several barrels with the same receiver is a nifty idea. Since our final real gunshop folded (the owner/'smith passed away), there is really no reasion not to buy from Wally's. They are almost the 'only game in town'. We do have a few gun/pawnshops, but their prices can be ridiculous! And forget service - you buy, you are on your own! If I want something Wally can't order, I do use one pawnshop's FFL to order what I want from GunsAmerica.

Ok. It is not the best most desireable thing to buy a gun from the wally. Some of the policies do bite, like the gun an dammo sale thing. The corner gun store may never be able to price match, & wally may never be able to give good service on the product they sell. Now, here are some good points. A.They do sell guns. That is good. I still miss the glory days when Sears Wards and other department stores, hardware stores etc. sold them. I still have one Montgomery Wards gun. B. A little price compettiton is healthy. I'min busines to make money, I understand. No reason in bending anyone over though. I haven't bought a gun from wally, yet. I may someday. It would be one among many from the gun store & that one from Wards. I believe in supporting any place that sells a firearm. I think we'd have alot bigger post if waly stopped selling them all together. Support firearm sales! |

Thank you guys for all the replies. We've purchased two firearms from Wal-Mart in that past, one being a Marline 336 .30-.30, and the other being a Savage .22. Both were great for what they were used for, and I hope to find the same with this shotgun. I've decided to get the 20 gauge with the 26 inch barrel, partly because they don't have any thing else in, and I'm not to worried about it since its only $94. It might take a few days, or weeks, as we are making a cross-country move and I might wait until we get settled to buy it, but I'll let you guys know how it performs once I get it. Thanks again guys, Jeff

I got my Mossberg 835 Turkey Special (12 gage pump in Realtree) on a clearance at Wallyworld for 200 bucks. This was when Realtree was switching everything over to Realtree Hardwood, and they were dumping the original realtree line. I got a sweet deal on the thing, fiber sights, take 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 magnums, ported barrel, blah blah blah. Whenever I'm at Walmart I check out the sporting goods section for deals like that. Go for it if you want it. jen |
