12ga Shotguns

Hey guys,

I've recently found interest in bird hunting and sporting clays and was wondering if any of you have advice on what 12ga shotguns are somewhat affordable and reliable. Also, any advice on where to purchase them at the best price would be great.

My only limitations are the gauge, I'd like it to be 12ga. I'd also prefer O/U or Semi-Auto to Pump Action, just because I find it difficult to shoot doubles with a pump action.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

My brother has a Remington 870 Express Mag and I love it, but if possible I'd like to get a faster shooting action. His shotgun is as tough as nails, but I'm not sure if I could get the speed needed to shoot double clays.

Being a huge fan of Remington firearms, anyone ever shot one of these?

I shoot double clays with my Mossberg pump...takes practice...but it's really fun. But then again, I like a challenge. Charles Daily has some semi-auto's I've seen for a decent price...somewhere around $300. About their reliability...I couldn't tell you. I've got a Beretta semi-auto and love the thing to death. Pricey...but it'll last a lifetime.

Do you have any friends or acquaintences from whom you could borrow different brand shotguns and try them for yourself? Pump, semi auto, side by side and over and under plus brand names and price ranges will give you a wide range to choose from. If you're going to shoot both targets, hunt and possibley use it for self defense, I would recommend a pump gun. Personally I'm a Mossburg fan, but of course others have their own preferences. Unless you find a good sale, chances are Charles Daly is about as cheap as your going to get.

stay away from that cheap @$$ russian/remington O/U. it wont take the beating of shooting competetively. pump guns really are less than optimal when shooting doubles. how big your budget is, will affect which gun to choose.

Well, if you don't want a nice pump like a mossy. There are some pretty nice OU's by Stoeger in the Condor line. They even have an awesome looking 16 OU. The guage of gentlemen.

I like my side by sides. But then again I've never really done clays, except off the tailgate of my pickup with a WallyWorld thrower. That's good for teaching yourself to drop to that second trigger, instead of pulling the first one twice...

I also like my bolt-actions, but I'll admit there might be more practical shotguns.

I have shot stogers, but I think they had bad recoil, could have been the stock fit though. And I would stay away from the 16 gauge, their shells are very tough to find, steel being close to impossible. I would shoot some shotguns that freinds own, then decide. I would really consider an 870, it will give you years of good use.
