| Personaly I believe the 870 is the better shotgun, yet the one's who own Mossberg pumps love theres too. I own 2 870's and there just uncomfortable to me...I've don't own a Mossberg pump but have held many of them and they seem to be more comfortable to aim and operate and the price you pay for a Mossberg is affordable to most all. |

| Well if'n I could find one in really good condition I'd prefer an Ithaca mdl 37 (please note the lust in my voice as I say that!). I always loved the feel and smoothness of that shotgun.

| Hello I am new to this sight and I have found it very informative,I have owned and hunted with various shotguns over the years.I have only owned one mossburg and did not like the squarness and thinkness of the stock, the gun performed perfect but did not fit me,I just can't seem to get away from my 16 gauge 870 wingmaster that was made in the 50's (what's up with the express ?)I am currently looking for a strictly home defense shotgun and would like to know the difference between the mossburg 500 and 590 |

| I've shot a Maverick quite abit which is a mossberg, now that i have a new Benelli Nova, i use it mostly, it is a very sweet shooting gun and patterns awesome with the modified choke |

| Super Moderator ![]() | The Mossberg 590 is the definitive heavy defense shotgun. If you want a small, light shotgun to tuck away, and possibly set up with a pistol grip and folding stock, I'd say stick with the 500. If you want something with a bit of heft to it that can take a bayonet and hold a few more rounds, and plan to keep it in stock configuration, I think the 590 is the way to go. I'm someone who thinks that a good compact home defense gun is a handgun, and that if you want to use a shotgun it should be substantial without being too bulky. But of course there's nothing wrong or insubstantial about a compact 500 in 12 or 20ga.

| 500 hands down. got em both and the moss500 is a freindlier , smoother , lighter gun. i just got the 870 to say i have one. the 500 i can operate in the dark. never , yes never had a misfire on my 500. the 870 jams and sticks every 50 rounds. |

| Though I promote the Mossberg 535ATS and the 500 I personaly believe the Remington 870 is the better gun yet Mossbergs have so much more to offer and more to choose from and Remingtons prices are higher. If I ever buy another shotgun I will buy a 535ATS Pump I already have 2 870's and there to uncomfortable for me to hold but the one I used most often has served me very well...A.H |

| I've shot both and think it boils down to what 'feels' best to you. I went with the 870. ![]()

| Senior Member | The Ithaca model 37 has always been my favorite pumpgun.I have a Deerslayer model I have used for years. It seems that at one time or another I have owned them all.I just sold a mossberg model 835 ulti-mag 3 1/2 magnum 12 gauge, because the kick was more than brutal than I wanted.I would pick the Rem.870 over the Mossberg but that is only my opinion. |
