i'm kinda new to the site.but i know there are alot of imforative people on here. i got a rossi single shot 410. the hammer works fine without a shell in it. with a shell in its a bear to get the hammer back, then acts like the hammer does not want to release. going to get a box o regular shells and try to break it in. any ideas. can really ruin a young girl on her first hunting trip. try to shoot but can't then she was not ready and the gun went off and scared her.

Well, you stumped me on this one... If the gun is locking into battery with a shell in it, I can't figure anything that would affect the hammer or Trigger on a Rossi single shot .410....HMMMMmmmmmmmm ![]() Rich

The extractor is not letting the barrel to close completely when there is a cartridge in it.There is a half moon shape in the top of the extractor where the extraction ring on the cartridge sets that probably is too thick. If you take the bbl off and buff that out it will close tight. If you try another brand of .410 shells they may work.If you are familliar with working on gun parts you can disassemble the extractor and buff it up and make it work but if you arent good at working on things like that go to a gunsmith and he can do it fairly easy. sam.

I think Sam is on the right track. That was my first shotgun as well - But I think they are a bad choice as a first shotgun. The hammer is an accident looking for a place to happen. I bought my son a Remington 870 in 20ga. They cost just a little over $200 and are simple, dead reliable and actually is a very good bird gun (I traded my son in a dove field one day when he wanted to try stepping up to a 12ga). I said all this to suggest you consider trading the .410 in on a 20ga Rem. 870 - that would also solve the problem. |

Well thanks for the info i took the barrel off the receiver and put it back together again and seems to be working just fine. i have a rem 870 20 that she can use or a mossberg 500 20. but i think her plans on becoming a deer hunter may have faded after a bad day in the field. my wife and i told her we wanted her to try it one more time before she decides she does not like it. she said she would. i have a marlin .22 i am going to take her out and let her play with for a few weekends AFTER DEER SEASON is over to many crazy people out there. i want her to get used to shooting without a scope and then move her up to the marlin that does have a scope on it.
