| Rem. 870 Heatshield
Hi everyone, Im currently outfitting my 870 with a bunch of add ons,and I was looking for a good heatshield for my 20 inch barrel. After browsing the web I seem to only find the universal type made by tac star and advanced technology. Both claim they are universal for 12 gauge shotguns however after reading about a dozen customer reviews everytime I see a negative comment its specifically from an 870 owner. Biggest problem is either part isnt so universal after all resulting in everything from scratched barrels, or lots of "adapting" done to the fore end or the heatshield itself. People with mossbergs and winchester defenders seem to be the only happy customers. I was wondering if anyone knew of barrel heatshield designed specifically for the 870 or of any other part that will work well. Thanks, Last edited by TACAV; 12-09-2007 at 04:15 AM. |

| Remington design
You must understand large firms such as Remington have vast legal resources to protect their designs. Building something directly adaptable to a design owned by Remington is the same as running a high risk chance for legal action. This is why so many aftermarket suppliers have little statements inserted such as "Some Gunsmiting Required". In that manner the gunsmith absorbs the legal risk. In terms of a heat shield you really should question the need for this as steel passes heat very efficiently. Heat shields are not used by skeet and trap shooters who use enough ammunition to generate large amounts of heat. Opening your action to in-barrel air flow rapidly dissipates heat. |

Good luck on the fitting - your gun to do with as you will. But, I have no desire to have one near my shotgun. I see them as dead weight. Their is no need to have your hand on top of your shotgun barrel to need a shield there. The main purpose I see them serving is to cut the crap out of your hand during firing - most of the ones I have seen are thin sheet metal with sharp edges. They may look cool, but I go for function over looks. Just my 2 cents - which I know you didn't ask for.

Yea I figured it was more function over looks, right now I have 20 inch barrel 3 round extension tube 6 round side saddle on left side of reciever knoxx industries recoil reducing adjustable pistol grip and shoulder stock combo knoxx industries 5 round side saddle on rear shoulder stock trigicon ghost ring sites 3 way piccitinny railed fore end vertical fore grip streamlite tac lite. mounted on side. I was thinking about perhaps a heatshield just to top it off but wasnt sure considering all the crap that goes into it. Ill probably just leave it as it is. Thanks guys, |

I think there cool looking and add a bit more intimidation to the shotgun. Call Remington costermer service and see if they'll sell you one. Now as far as cutting you...I just bought a Mossberg 590 and looking at pictures you might think as I did that they might cut you or get in the way but they don't. As far as thiness it's thick enough and it must be heat treated some because it's not flimsy. Maybe others are cheapy but there not on this military/police model

I have read the same complaint about all the metal heat shields, they scratch the finish on the barrel and rattle. I found this glass one on e-bay. It was easy to fit aroud my sights and fits very tight. ![]() Here's a link
