| Registered User | Slugs out of a choked barrel ??? Is it safe to shoot slugs out of a choked ( IC or M) 12 guage? Mossberg does not recommend to shoot anything out of the barrels without a choke being installed? |

| Super Moderator ![]() | It is supposed to be safe to shoot slugs thru a barrel with screw in chokes, however I have had them come in for repairs where they Split the end of the barrel, blew out the chokes, etc. I'm not an Engineer, I'm a Gunsmith,But,I realized that if you look down a Rifled Slug screw-in choke, the twist is counter clockwise so after repeated firing the slug can actually Unscrew the choke, loosening it causing failure if it is Not Re-tightened in the threads. Since slugs are rifled the same way, I figure this is what happened to standard smooth Chokes in IMP. Cyl And MOD. that the slug starts spinning and loosens the choke after a time, or the chokes were loose to begin with.My 870 Rem. Slug barrel is like that. I personally prefer to shoot slugs in barrels without screw in chokes... Rich

| Registered User | Thank you for the input. The chokes are threaded. I was told at a gunshop that it was fine to shoot slugs through the improved cyl choke. I wanted to ask here as well.. this is a great forum by the way. I have sent an E mail asking Mossberg. John |

| Senior Member | Don't ruin your threads If you have a screw in choke system anything fired through the barrel without a choke screwed in will damage the barrel's threads. A slug is really best fired through a cylinder (no choke factor) setting. The sabots may generally be fired through a choked barrel as the material surrounding the sabot will compress without damaging the choke tube. |

| Senior Member | I also have fired slugs through two IC chokes without damage but like Mooseman said I kept an eye on the choke loosening. I did call Remington quizzing them about #4 buckshot and my turkey choke to get more range on old yellow tooth and they said not a good idea. I guess the pattern is better with IC choke anyway for buckshot?

| Senior Member | As for buckshot, the only way to know for sure is by patterning with the shells and gun you plan to use. But tighter chokes squeeze the big shot together and deform them more, which may give bigger/more irregular patterns than you'd get with a straight cylinder bore.

| Senior Member ![]() | As Mooseman said I personally dont to choose to shoot slugs through a screwin choke because I have seen ruptured barrels. When a barrel is cut through about a 1/3rd of its thickness by cutting threads in it,that takes some of the safety factor and then you run a slug down 20"+barrel gaining speed and the diammeter is .728" and suddenly slam it into a choke that is .690 to .710 diameter, that has to cause a significant jump in pressure. It may be safe but I dont trust it. sam. |

| Member | For my Stoeger Condor O/U the manual says to fire slugs from a C choke. The chokes for my model are screw-in internal. If the factory said its ok and will warranty their product I'd imagine its safe to do. However, I am a novice and Mooseman seems to know his stuff. |

| Registered User | Hey Guys, I am probably the most green person on this forum ....so i'm not really familliar with all the termanology...I just got an 870 remington super mag 12 gauge and it has a screw in choke .....i was told the only way i can shoot a slug with my gun is to go buy a slug barrell. What do you guys say?? ![]() |

| Senior Member | For sabot slugs intended to be used with a rifled barrel, that's pretty much true. The old style Foster slugs are meant to work in smooth bores. I still think the whole concept of "rifled shotguns" is strange.
