And yes, obviously the barrels would rupture if they were stuck flush against a wall. But what I'm really interested in is the propellant power of an average cartridge in an average 12ga, having seen the varying effects that recoil can have on inexperienced shooters of varying physical builds.

Basically I was wondering if there's a rule-of-thumb equation (i.e. one a bit less complex than the brain-rupturing one that Jerry suggests) which'd reduce the whole idea of recoil to 'gun+load=distance propelled'.

As for encouraging a girl to fire a shotgun against a wall.....My god, every time you think you've figured out just how stooopid the human race can be, something comes along and makes you realize you'd WAY underestimated people's capacity for idiocy.

But back to the topic: has anyone got any actual idea (roughly) how far a shotgun MIGHT jump back if at liberty to do so?

All responses are appreciated (except those given in miles).
Distance wise, I'm not sure. However, you would be closing up a vent to the approximately 33,000 psi generated by the shotgun blast. You would then have the same problem as a pressure vessel--what do you do with the blast? It will find the path of least resistance--the breech.

That's why Mossberg markets a breaching shotgun with a standoff--it has vents cut in to allow the gases to escape.

Actually, the wall defeating power of a shotgun at near muzzle contact ranges is outstanding. There are shells with powdered lead slugs that are made specifically for taking out locks and hinges.

Wow.

You guys (Jerry, Mooseman, Uncle Red, Samuel) really make me feel a peanut-brain.

I'd love to say that I grasp the basics of what you're telling me, but frankly most of it went over my (solid bone) head.

Am I right in thinking that the main points here are:

(a) Expect the shotgun to jump back anything from five to ten feet and

(b) Never fire a shotgun in space if you can avoid it

- yes?

Your co-operation is hugely appreciated.

(I freely admit to having dozed for years on end in Physics class. In Math class I simply died peacefully in my sleep.)
