Slugs in standard barrels

I've got a remington 870 express 12 gauge. Can I shoot a slug out of the barrel and choke it came with? If so do I need a certain choke to do so? Or do I need to get a slug barrel to use a slug in my shotgun? I am not totally positive what choke I have in the gun currently, I will check when I get home today.

Make sure the choke is tight. Most came with a modified choke and they work good but full will work too.If firing multiple times, keep checking the choke.A quarter works great on the chokes. sam.

I agree with Samuel, mine came with a modified choke too. And yours probably did.
I'll mention Wal Mart because there handy, they stock Remington chokes OR use to.
There not exspensive if you want to buy a Full choke. I did...A.H

My recommendation

This is a forum so you will get a wide variety of opinions. Personally, I feel the only logical setup for a slug is a rifled barrel of which there are many on the market. Otherwise, even with what people will write about sabots and Foster (forester) slugs I would shoot from a cylinder bore in my shotguns if I fired a slug in a smootbore. I am just telling you what I choose to do.

If you are going to shoot slugs from a smooth barrel then you should shoot rifled slugs or get a rifled choke tube and shoot sabot slugs. I disagree with what is said about choke size. I think you are suppose to shoot slugs from the most open choke you have. Modifieds and fulls are too constricting. Improved Cylinder and Cylinder chokes are best. Keep in mind a rifled barrel with sabot slugs will be much more accurate and getting a slug barrel for your gun is a good idea.

You can fire it but they dont shoot very straight. They need a spin. sam.

Rifled slugs do not spin so the riflings on them do no good at all.A screw in rifled choke is a great idea as it shoots about as straight as a rifled barrel in the half dozen we tried. And yes the more open chokes are best.I was saying it is safe to shoot slugs through a full choke as long as it is tight. sam.

By any chance does anyone know if they make replacement rifled barrels for New England single shot Pardners? I would be interested in buying one so i could shoot either sabot rounds or slugs out of it more accurately

It might be worth your while to shoot some rifled slugs out of the gun as is and get an idea of how it'll pattern before you jump thru hoops. Just and idea.

$81.00 for a screw in choke replacement barrel. NO rifled barrels though.

Naturally the metal in a shotgun barrel is not as thick as a rifle, so it seems to me that shooting a slug throuigh a full choke could pssibly do some damage or at least some wear. I would rccommend using an open choke or modified or getting a replacement barrel.
I don't know if any one has done testing on this but I have shot several slugs through a Winchester 1200 modified with good results.

If you fire slugs out of a smooth bore shotgun with a choke, only use forester slugs. Remington makes some really good ones.
