1100 or 1187

hey guys, my dad just said i could have one of his remmingtions. One is a 1187 and one is a 1100, both 12 gauge, both shoot 2.75 inch shells, both same barrel length, both are modified choke. Which one is the better gun?
Thanks for any help.

I have a 1100 and have never had a problem with it..............plus more available for the 1100 than the 1187...... you can take the 1100 from duck hunting to tactical home defense. 1187 is not a bad gun, just limited.....

Ask the old man which one hed rather give up! But I'm biased a bit. I have my dads old 1100 that he bought back in the 60s or early 70s. He only cleaned the barrel and the front of the bolt after he used it. The gun hasnt been taken apart completely ever. I plan to do that. But the thing doesnt fail anyhow. I'd take the 1100. Cant go wrong.

I would take the 1100 over 1187 every time. To me the 1100 just feels better.

If both guns fit you well, I would choose the 11-87. The 11-87 has a much improved pressure-compensating gas system and will handle most any load from the lightest to the heaviest. From what I've seen at the range and in the blind I think the 11-87 is more durable and much more reliable.

Theres nothing wrong with the 1100 but choose the 11-87 like aht six said.
Now are you sure the 11-87 want handle 3 " shells ? I thought that was "one" of the reason Remington came out with the 11-87...A.H

p.s. let us know which one you choose

Thats cool. I don't know anything about the 11-48 but I do own a Model 1100 3" Magnum which handles 2 3/4 shells very well too.
It is a honest pleasure to aim my 1100 it fits me so well.
It is the prettyest gun I own, the stocks on mine are very dark and matched.
I don't want to ding it up and maybe someday when my son gets it, it will be worth a few dollars more than what my wife paid for it back 1976.
Remington know longer sells a 3" Magnum Model 1100.

The 11-48 is recoil action, not gas action. Some are quite valuable.Would need prefix behind 48 to tell. sam.

My grandfather left me his 11-48 12 ga with the 30" full barrel. I treasure it and hunted with it for a long time. I got curious about the availability of 11-48's recently and through patience and gunbroker picked up a .410, 28 ga., 20 ga., and 16 ga. to go with it. Now I have the whole set. Parts are hard to come by for the 11-48 and I don't really plan to hunt with any of them but they are a nice collection. I would probably go for the 1100 if I were going to hunt with it as parts and aftermarket parts are available and the 11-48 though a fine shotgun is more of a collectors item and herlum than a hunting gun. Don't misunderstand it is a shooter but would be hard to replace or repair.

Either way you go you can not go wrong. I bought an 1100 in the 70s. I still shoot it and love it. Only changes I made were to put in Briley choke tubes and had the gun fitted to me. When I shoot, it is like an extension of my body. In 38 years of shooting this shotgun I have had one jam. That was due to my poor reloads not the firearm. I do clean it regularly but I love it. Several years ago I inherited a Model 11 16g. Looks like an auto 5. Sweet little shotgun. Not as sleek or pretty as the 1100 but it fits like a glove and shoots as straight as an arrow.

You have a nice problem to have and a wonderful father for letting you have your choice.

Tell your Dad you would prefer a new Remington G3! Maybe he will give you both guns to use as trade in's. (Just Joking) They (1100 & 1187) are both fine firearms. I think the other poster is right though, the 1187 should handle 3" shells w/no problem.

Not sure on the 1148!
