Shooting Skeet

I am shooting in a Charity event on Nov 9th which will be a round of trap, skeet and sporting clays. I shoot trap regularly and sporting clays maybe twice a year. I haven't shot skeet in 40 years and could use a few pointers on the game.

I shoot an 870 and own 3 of them but I will need an auto ot O/U for the skeet. I can borrow a Rem 1100 or a Browning o/u for this shoot.

Dunno why, I always shoot better with an O/U then with a pump.

Go with the o/u. It's balanced and made for the application you speak of.

If the O/U has skeet chokes in both barrels it would be best.(maybe) But if you have modefied?full go with the auto and modified or improved. ,,,sam.

Thanks for the help guys. I think the o/u has a full set of chokes, I might go with that one.

With all breakopens as well as that one, open and close as easy as possible and still make it function.Opening and closing with a "snap"or excesive force is what makes the hinge (pivot) get loose/sloppy,not shooting. ,,,sam.

Bring the 870 with you to the event. If you have some spare time, shoot a few
doubles with it on the skeet range. My son and I use the 870 all the time on skeet.
It can be a challenge and is quite fun.

The only problem I have with semis or pumps at skeet is that you have to retrace your steps to pick-up the empties. After the round is over of course.

Have fun

Blackrock, if the o/u has the ability to select barrels when firing, always shoot the bottom barrel first. It will put the recoil more directly into your shoulder making for less kick and blah blah blah. Most o/u are setup that way anyways! Good luck!

Hey there Rock
Tell us how u fared in the recent skeet event u attended. I know u haven't shot skeet in some time. Just wonder if u shot with that pump? If not, maybe next time.
Since i removed a few coils from the action spring from my rem sport 48(gun cycles well now) my confidence and score has improved.
Now I need to make good habit between pump and semi.
Always looking for challenge!

I got humbled pretty quickly on the Skeet event. I shot my friends Browning O/U field gun and did break 15 out of 25. Picked up two pair of doubles at once, that's a hoot.
The Sporting Clays event was real funa (20) and I did 22 on the Trap range for a total score of 57 out of 7 5possible.Oursquad came in 15th out of 50.

The high score shooter was a cute little 30 something blondie who shot 73/75.

I did mange to pickup a couple of my doubles plus I got two birds with one shot twice. It can happen if you catch both birds right where they cross. But that #8 station in a pure D" Mother Bear to hit from.

I will be back to this range again as I am now intrigued with getting some practice in on this skeet shooting. They have a large RV parking spot and every shooting range you can imagine. After I retire I might just spend a week there and burn some powder.
