| Senior Member | silhouette minimum high power rifle caliber I've always wanted to try silhouette with high power rifle. I've done it with .22 rimfire out to 100 yards. From what I'm reading off internet the 6mm is too light? What about the 25-06? The 100 grain bullet is probably too light but what about the 120 grain in 25-06?

| 6mm or 243 is the start... most of what ive seen are short actions on the line... i herd some guys talking about the 125 in the 243 being to lite... i have and it dose the job use the speer 125 tnt hp. in my .308. its the only thing my rifle likes.... some of the other guys that shot with the kids went to the same as i was useing cause they were cheaper and didnt bite like the heaver bullets.. if you ever get a chance to try the big bore sil do it !!!!! it is a blast !!!! i was watching my son shoot with a spotting scope and after he shot i thought i seen a mouse running down by the targets at 550 yds.. the old guy next to me said if you see that mouse again let him know and he would shoot it ... i said ok .. then i seen another 1 running down there .. i told the guy i seen another and he laughed at me and said that was the bullet. when you spot you see the bullet down range , then you see a white puff, you see the target go over . then you see the shooter open the bolt and put the brass back in the box then you hear CLANG !!!!!! |

| Senior Member | oooooohweeee 550 yards!!! I had to go back on the internet to confirm the yardage. I thought 400 yards was the max but indeed...547 yards for rams. Wowww! I've never even fired over 300 yards and even then my poor little 223 cal was being being shoved around pretty good with the wind. Is that Speer 125 gr TNT HP a flat base bullet? I've heard it was accurate, but most must use boat tails? You must have a bull barrel on the .308? The only shooting position is free hand standing right?

| killer: you start out at the chickens at 218 yards.. . then pigs at 350, turkeys at 450 and then the rams 550 yards... they are waaaaaaaaay down there.... the speer 125 tnt's are a flat base... the man at speer said its a shame to call them a varmint bullet.. if you can find them in the bulk pack you can get 500 of them for 52 bucks... alot of shooting there .. my rifle is a savage 12bvss. its got a 26 in s.s. fluted heavey bdl. its a little bit to heavy for a reg. match , but for an informal match it works great. and yep you got it !!!! its ALL off hand just like a .22 match... you also get 2.5 mim. to get off 5 shots... i was asking the guy s what the size of the ram was and they told me it was 38 in. long and 18 inches high and weighs 50 #'s my middle son has used his 30/30 bolt rifle 1 time .... you should have herd the line when he took a ram down with that thing.... |

| Senior Member | I pretty much humilated myself with my .22 rimfire, I suppose I could do the same with my high powered rifle...it really does separate the boys from the men doesn't it? (freehand) But as far as working up loads for this kind of shoot what is considered minimum accuracy needed at 100 yards...one inch? My 25-06 bull barrel will print close to the magic inch all day but not quite. More like 1.25 but no flyers, and a 100 shots will all be within 1.25 inch's. It's the max loading too so it's got some good speed. What about heat mirage? Not only from the ground but the barrel must be throwing some off too towards the end of the 5 rounds? How much scope power do you use 6-12 max? I don't think I could handle more power. Too shaky at 24X esp freehand. My God there are so many things to consider in this type of shoot. Your getting me excited!!!

| i have tryed .22 sil's 1 time and have never done it since... but i do run a .22 match at our gun club... i get a few that have never tryed it befor and a few that have done it for years... my 3 boys have been shooting it for the past 5 years... we did the big bore thing 3 times befor gas started to go up... we had to drive about 80 miles to get to the range 1 way... the wife kinda put a stop to that... but it was fun.... as far as working up a load i use the only load i shoot out of my rifle... i load up about 1000 rds a year and keep them on the shelf till loading time around christmas.... with my savage i can keep 5 shots about the size of a dime off a rest. my 2 oldest sighted in the rifle when we first went . the middle 1 started out on the chickens and pigs then the oldest did the turkeys and rams.. where we shot they put clay peidgons on the back stop to sight in on off a rest... by the time my son got to the rams they were all gone.. 1 of the guys asked if he could see the end of a 4x4 sitting down there . he hit it 5 out of 5 off a rest... mirage. this was in the spring time when we shot... you could see it down range but we never noticed it comming off the bdl... the kids will shoot this rifle all day with out it heating up.... scope???? dont laugh , but i have a cheap piece of glass on it !!!! its a bsa 6x24 with target turrets... those are a must.... like i said you can laugh but i out shot a remingto with a lieoplod the other nigh.. and i made sure i let the guy know i only paid about 100 bucks for my scope... the kids use it on about 12 x for shooting . but when i am sitting on the hill outback watching for a yote to wounder by i keep it on 24 and i like to watch the field mice in the hedge row. my middle son has a 2.5x10 on his 30/30 that he uses for sil... he ran out of adj. on the rams so he used the mil dots to get it out that far.... i forgot to say my rifle is about 13 #'s with scope .. like i said its not leagal for a reg. match . but the kids will hold that thing all day . i even had then carry it out in the woods for me deer hunting on time ... i was sitting over a nice ridge .... |

| Senior Member | Well if you have a range close by and they have competition for DCM/CMP they take it out to 1000 yards with that particular weapon. Held a stainless M1A with camo stock in my hands about 2 years ago. They only wanted $1100.00 for it. They asked it to put it down and step back while they wiped the drool off it. God I wish I could have scrapped up that $1100.00
