Double Action Fun Shoot

I'm using this target and contest idea with permission from the member of another forum. I really enjoyed the last pistol match we had so I'm going to follow in billy's footsteps and start my own. I've left the rules exactly as the creator had them. Depending on how the contest goes (and the shooting I've seen from some of the members here) we may want to increase the distance.

Since we are almost at the end of January, I'll make the deadline midnight, February 28th.

RULES

This is a Fun Shoot for double action revolver shooters. A test of a shooters’ overall accuracy while shooting in double action, shooters simply print the attached target, shoot, score, and post (or PM) the results. Highest score in each of 3 categories wins bragging rights and forum-wide huzzahs. In addition to being fun, you may satisfy some curiosity to see how you rate among your fellow wheelgunners, and it may highlight some areas you might be interested in improving upon.

This is intended to be a measure of overall accuracy with a double action trigger. You’ll be shooting strong and weak handed, both 2- and 1-handed, and your overall score is a measure of how well you do shooting all 4 of these combinations.

This is also intended to be an honest self-assessment. By creating a target with 4 bullseyes on a single piece of paper, your score will more accurately reflect your relative strengths and weaknesses. This might be less so if standard targets are used, which might otherwise tempt the shooter to cherrypick their best results while ignoring the rest.

1. Target:

a. Print the attached target containing 4 bullseyes on standard 8.5 x 11” paper. The 4 bullseyes correspond to 4 combinations of strong/weak, 2- and 1-handed shooting. More info is included below.

b. To be valid, the overall score is to be determined from bullseyes from the same target, i.e. on the same piece of paper. If you flub a string, you can certainly re-shoot, but you'll have to use a fresh target and re-shoot everything to be valid.

c. Any one target should be completed in one trip to the range. Once you "start" the match by shooting one of the bullseyes, finish it by shooting the other 3.

d. No fliers. Everything counts. If you miss the paper entirely, or one of your shots encroaches on another bullseye, be honest, and let that shot count as "zero".

2. Distance: 21 feet (7 yards)

3. Shooting: 5 aimed deliberate shots per bullseye, 20 rounds total, shot standing, unsupported, double action only! As indicated in Rule 1 and on the target itself, you'll be shooting 4 combinations of strong/weak and one/two-handed.

a. Upper right bullseye: Shot 2-handed, with your strong hand firing the gun.
b. Upper left bullseye: Shot 2-handed, with your weak hand firing the gun.
c. Lower right bullseye: Shot 1-handed with your strong hand.
d. Lower left bullseye: Shot 1-handed with your weak hand.

4. Scoring: Total points. 200 possible. The higher point is awarded if the hole touches a line.

5. Sights: Irons only.

6. 3 Categories: Snubbie (≤3" barrel), Service (3"-4" barrel) and Target (>4") Revolver categories. Rimfire and centerfire compete together.

7. Reporting, Submission & Posting of Scores: A shooter may submit scores for any category they qualify, and may submit multiple times per category. Targets and scores may be posted directly to the thread or PM'd to me. Include the specific gun, barrel length and caliber. At the end of the match I'll post all the scores, but only reveal the top shooter in each category.

We might have to handicap you, seeing as how you're ambidextrous and all...

Going to the range tomorrow. This will be fun. I've never bothered to shoot weak hand or one-handed so it will be a learning experience. Always up for a challenge.

Jtuck - Any special consideration here for a fellow Missourian? hehee
I will have to load up some lighter loads to use the Ruger 44. Sounds like a hoot. I will let you know very soon if I am in.

I've never shot this target either so we're all in the same boat. I'm kind of anxious to see how I do.

Okay, I'll start, and trust me, I set the bar pretty low.

I used a Taurus model 627 Tracker revolver, 4" barrel, adjustable sights, 357 magnum.

1st target:
Strong Hand, two hands: 22
Strong Hand, one hand: 19
Weak Hand, two hands: 0 (I kid you not)
Weak Hand, one hand: 35 (I have no idea how that happened)
Total: 76 points.

2nd target:
Strong Hand, two hands: 25
Strong Hand, one hand: 20
Weak Hand, two hands: 19
Weak Hand, one hand: 27
Total: 91 points

I remembered this contest as I was packing up at the range after shooting about 250 rounds. I saw the targets and thought what the heck, give it a try. I rarely shoot double action, never single handed or weak handed, so I had no idea what to expect.

I had one target with five hits. 4 targets with 4 hits. 2 with 3 hits. And one with 0 hits.

For the first target I used my weak eye with the weak hand. Had to put on reading glasses to see the sights on my Taurus.

For the second target I cross sighted using my strong eye with my weak hand.

I have no friggin' idea how I ended up shooting my best targets with my weak hand, single handed.

This was fun. I'll have to go back and give this another try before the Fun Shoot ends.

Like I said, the bar is set low.

We need pictures of the targets please.

Gotchya jtuck. I've never done any type of competition or anything like this at all to know this. Thank you for replying and uncornfusing me.

I'm gonna have to talk to the guys at the indoor range I shoot at. They dont allow targets they dont sell. Maybe put this one over top of one of theirs. This looks like fun and would hate to miss it because of them.

I bought their target (B27), turned it around backwards, and taped the targets on the back.

Got it. Here you go.

If it makes any difference, I loaded my last cylinder on target #1 with two .38 specials because I ran out of .357s. All the shots on target #2 were with .38s, same gun though. Can definitely tell the difference in the holes.

Let me know if I counted anything wrong. I leaned to the conservative side. Heck, I probably added wrong too. I used my organic calculator.

I have to apologize to you (and everyone else).

We have been super busy at work lately, and I haven't been able to give this contest the attention I should. I still have full intentions of entering a target myself, and hope others do the same. Hopefully I will be able to get to the range in the next week or two.

Thanks for your patience.

Oh yes, let's try to get some more people involved, too!

No problem. I thought this little informal competition sounded like fun and was hoping more folks would get involved. I like to learn from the folks who are good. My first time out was pretty much a dud, but I learned something and will do it again the next time at the range, possibly 2/10.

In fact, there was another thread in G&G somewhere that linked to a bunch of videos from S&W about grip, trigger finger placement, etc. I learned alot from those videos and can see how they'll help the next time I do this. They are for revolvers, but there's just a lot of good basic information that can be used for any handgun. Even though I've been shooting for decades, I've never studied marksmanship basics with a handgun. It's been fun.

Here's the video link. Tiles with Categories
