It makes sense to stick with the original mag. As for the scope, I will wait until the gun shoots before I focus on the sight set up. As for greasing the gun. I have been greasing the piston, operating rod, gas tube, bolt and chamber. It's light but lubed. I will dry it up when the valve comes in. I have to get me some break cleaner.

most scope mounts come with anchoring screws to keep it from moving alot with the gun's action.

Get to know your SKS in it's original state first and then if you feel like you still need to try messing with detachable mags then do so. Learn your rifle first and I am willing to bet you will never feel the need to mess around with those mags. Save that money for more ammo!

Just my .02

Gar. I think I disagree with that once a month Here's my 2 cents based on experience. My Norinco and my Dad's Norinco have detachables and work very well. My Dad's had the original until recently and I switched it out with a 30rd steel mag he had lying around. At the same time I tested my Tapco 20rd mag with his. 20 shots in about 30 seconds and not a single problem. Same with his 30rd. Emptied it quickly without a single problem. I think I did do some light filing to it, but not much. Basically smoothing out rough edges. Same with my tapco and my steel mags in my Norinco. All work very well and I can guarantee that I can empty all 5 of my mags(2 tapco 20rds and 3 steel 30rds) in the time someone with an original can empty theirs 5 times. Now with the steel mags, I think myself and my Dad are exceptions. Generally steel mags don't work as well. However, Tapco DO. I would like more at some point, but haven't bought them because I don't really need them. With a tapco you have 2x the firepower before reloading. In a SHTF situation, it would help out with that 11 threat comes out right after you used your 10th shot and are trying to reload. I like having more firepower just because its convenient. As for stripper clips, far as I know they can also be used with detachables. However, I haven't tried it so I may be wrong there. The only downfall to the SKS is that the bolt doesn't allow you to switch mags unless the bolt is back. However, like the original they push the bolt stop up when the last shot is fired and it bolt is locked back as soon as your last shot is gone and then you only have to pop it out and pop another in. Tapco is really nice about that in that you don't have to fish around with the "duckbill" to get it seated. It's designed so you just stick it in there and margins are perfect so that it slides in nice and pretty.

So. there's my rant for the day lol.

TT, one more thing to look at....

With the gas tube off and the gas valve body removed, check the gas port down into the bore. It could be clogged or reduced in size - run a rod or drill bit (by HAND!) down into it and scrape out any gunk. Can't hurt and may help!
And ditto on the 'dry' gas system. Greasing it just blows grease out the vent holes in the gas tube, and makes for a very messy cleanup!

jmp8927,

I hear you. I tried a detachable years ago and it was nothing but a pain in the butt. I just prefer the ten round mag. Like someone else said, Ten in ten out every time. If I need more than ten rounds then I am pretty well screwed or in need of a WSAR-10.

As for the 11th threat, that is why you have more than one firearm.

^ LOL True that. However, you might want to buy one Tapco and give it a shot. I know the old steel mags and the 30rd polymer(not tapco) tend to be crappy and a lot of people got turned off because of them.

I might do that even though just for fun. I like using the 10 round mag because I know it will feed perfectly every time. If I really need more than ten rounds I might look at a WASR 10 or something like it.

My SKS is also going to be my hunting rifle and I do not plan on modifying it. My Yugo was dead on out of the box and I have had zero problems with it. I just don't want to mess that up playing with detachable magazines.

I believe the posts I have read here about the detachable mags and a lot of guy have had great success with the Tapco mags. I have nothing against detachable mags, I just like to keep my rifle stock as it was made in 1978. Like I said if you need more than ten rounds in a home invasion scenario then you are seriously screwed.

I would like to get more then ten rounds in a mag just rip a lot of rounds just once in a while. If someone comes into my home I probably would show him the barrel of my 40 caliber glock.
I've still yet to receive the gas valve so I'm getting antsy again. I guess I'll just clean it again. Check the gas hole that goes into the barrel like a few have mentioned. I know I didn't see it before to clean it. Damn those elusive holes!

1- Does anyone know of a good scope that isn't going to brake the bank for the SKS. I bought a cheap $30 one just to get started and it's barely good enough for 50 yards.

2- Maybe I need to generate a new thread in the AR-15 forum but I love that gun and would like to get one before the possible Democrat invasion. I see many different makes for the AR-15. I would like to spend less then a grand to be able to afford the ability to modify. What is a good AR-15 that is not going to have me on the forums asking why it's jamming. I saw a review from this guy on Youtube.com He had a DPMS Panther and it looked perfect. It was only $600-$800. I could afford the mods for it with the little extra that I would have, however, I'm willing to buck up for the Colt if it's just a better manufactured gun. Any AR-15 owners out there?

My only 2 cents would be to tear it apart completely and boil every metal part, springs included then lube em and boil em again, lube correctly and reassemble. Then it will go to the ammo. Wondered if you have the original magazine assembly or have gone to detach mags???? Just a thought. This site is full of knowledgable folks and they will do everything to get you up and running. Hang in there. Augie

First off steaming the parts may sound good but water causes ? Rust!
Get some brake or carb cleaner or meneral spirits and clean .. common sense says no water!!! I know I will get flack over my opinon but I have never in 50 yrs ever had rust on a weapon because I never use water in any shape or form to clean a weapon....
follow this video for disassemble and check every piece

I don't hate to admit that I agree with my man Marion. I have a steamer ans I shake with fear when I would entertain the thought. I believe in common sense myself. Sometimes I have to read suggestions twice to decipher if someone is just trying to perform some rookie hazing on me. I was being nice by saying boiling "makes sense to me". I didn't want to offend Augie or his hit-man looking friend in his photo. lol I found that the general consensus promotes carb-cleaner, brake cleaner, and mineral spirits. Where is that damn postman? I can only clean the gun so many times before I disintegrate it. "Did I hear a package drop in the door".....

Use Mineral spirits...Safer, Easier on your skin, You can leave it in a coffee can to settle out and pour the clear off and reuse it, and It is CHEAPER and does an excellent job on Cosmoline...It's Mooseman Recommended !!!

Question

What about a parts washer, or the solvent used in them? I was loking around online and found this...Monster Parts Wash Concentrate — 1 Gallon | Parts Washers Accessories | Northern Tool + Equipment
Not what I remember, but it may work if you oil right after? What do you guys think?

I let my Yugo's gas piston soak in Mineral spirits for a few days, checking it every few hours to give it a quick wipe down. That's the only non abrasive way I can get that real thick, bad fouling off of it. I know it may be a little too picky to want that piece to always look new, but I figure it oughta help keep it performing new for a while too. lol
