The whole point of keeping a gun pointed down range is so that if it missfiers it will do so in a safe direction. I dont care if the range was surrounded by hundreds of miles of fields, some one could have been out there, and it is a moot point since it sounds like the range could have been in the middle of a city and you would have had the same problem.

you need to understand, we all get that you didnt know it was going to slam fire, but the reason for ALWAYS keeping a gun pointed down range is not so that when YOU shoot it it goes in a safe direction, it so when you didn't plan on it shooting it goes in a safe direction.

A bullet from your gun while it was in your hands left the safe area of the range, for that to happen you had to have done something wrong...there is now way around it. Learn from your mistake, and be thankful no one got hurt.

I have arrived at the conclusion that no matter what is said, someone will not see or admit error. Since you can not battle wits with someone whom is unarmed I will retire from this conversation.

back to he original purpus of this thread, I realized the other day that the fiering pin in my bolt didnt rattle freely, it wasn't sticking forward so hard that it would slam fire wolf, but it was marking the primers...I pulled the pin out and ran it on my felt buffing wheel and polished it and havent had a problem since.

Before I put the Murray pin in, I used to make sure my fp would rattle before I loaded it each time.

I make sure it rattles after every cleaning, which is after every range session.

Yeah, only Mod I knew was Billy. They should list the mods for the sections somewhere. Or do they, and I'm just missing it?

No the first rule is IT IS ALWAYS LOADED. Next is never point it anywhere but at the ground or a safe location , at a target or to kill , to which you did none of ,, Nothing more. The smartest thing is to learn from your mistakes instead of arguing about a HUGE mistake you made and forcing people here to think somehow there wrong for what you did.

Sometimes your feelings have to be hurt to learn..

Yes you had a accident and most understand that but your arrogance about it is what is ruining this thread, now please drop it. Rick B

David

You are an ignorant, arrogant, pin head, who should not ever touch another firearm. I had a slam fire and took out a $200 light fixture. I had no idea it was going to slamfire but Iwas aiming my gun down range. I was sitting at the bench and the second round fired as the rifle slipped of my shoulder. even though I caused minimal property damage the round still went into the berm. It was the first time I fired the gun and it was stripped down and taken to a gunsmith. before it was fired again. Rules at that range are to keep all firearms pointing down range or at the ground. period. If you had been at my range you would have been given sanctions or expulsion.

You fail to understand the point these guys are making. The four cardinal rules of firearm safety are
1. don't point your firearm at anything you are not willing to destry
2. All guns are always loaded.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you have decided to shoot.
and
4. Be aware of your backstop and beyond.

you may have been aware of your backstop but the roof is not a backstop. your backstop should have been down range.

Get your act together David and get a grip.

The original purpose of the thread was to hi-lite the problem of slam fires with the SKS. By talking about it, more people would learn that first it exists, and more importantly, the possible ways to eliminate the problem. I think we have done that.
In addition, we have now also discussed the importance of keeping your weapon pointed down range.

I see 2 instances of incorrect grammar / punctuation in your post. (LOL!)
Yes, the gun malfunctioned: on that we all agree. What most are saying is it was unsafe to point a loaded weapon in a direction in which you are unsure or unaware of the path/landing spot of the bullet. I've been reading your posts for a few days and am just wanting to say "Yes, it was a mistake on my part to point the gun up" and move onto another subject. I am not judging you, just forming an opinion. We all can and/or have learned from mistakes (ours or other people's we observed) and are better because of it.
We are amongst friends on this forum. Let's keep it that way. If one can not, he would be best to find another forum.

Yes, and more! I've always wanted a SKS but now have second thoughts due to a slam fire possiblility. Okay, I guess as my wife said she doen't like the SKS and since our marriage is a partnership I'll do my part and not get one. This will also give me leverage on a different gun too!
