Yep SilverRun, I've seen those! It always seemed a little silly to me to equip our troops with a weapon that gave up stopping power for more capacity. This is especially evident in Iraq and Afghanistan right now. Our guys are popping the bad guys who just keep coming! The .243 would give much better results and wouldn't drop capacity by enough to worry about. I like the AR platform but don't need any more expenses right now-Heck I can't afford the toys I already own!

CenturyHouse - I have no idea, I've been taking deer with my SKS for years, and from as far out as 150 yards. Which is a long way for shooting a deer, IMHO. Here in the flatlands, deer are plentiful enough that a long distance shot isn't necessary or most of the time, practical. It's probably just cause the SKS can look mean, and lord knows you don't wanna get caught hunting with a mean looking rifle, it might tork off the enviro-wacko's.

Not saying that's the SKS in and of itself is bad for hunting, JUST saying that it's a people hunter first and foremost in a world chock full of rounds designed specifically for killing large animals.

As a people killer, the FACT is that it's best suited on targets 250lbs and under. Add that to the spotty accuracy from your average Joe's SKS, (possibly)compounded by the use of cheap chinese or Russian ammo.

I'll say this. In a pinch, IF you're a true hunter and stalk, the SKS does fine. If that's your one rifle, that's fine, but if you own something more lethal then you SHOULD be using that.

edit:

Even James Bond, impeccable shot as he "is" was required to switch pistol calibers from .22 to .32 by his superiors. If you've got the option, then you should take it.

Stopper, sounds like you got a good shootin Siminov on your hands there

Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that any people you meet from time to time are merely the product of a deranged imagination.

Wink

Nope, a Norinco in the wood stock and 10 mag. Put a 4X28 scope onit but that didn't last long. Now it's just straight sights. I use 762x39 soft point or hollow point rounds. I didn't think anything of it, just an inexpensive hunt'n rifle and inexpensive ammo. And the way I finger, if the weapon is zero'd then it's all the person pulling the trigger as to how accurate. I've hit paperplates out to 250 yards with the SKS pretty much as it is right now.
I do agree there are better rounds out there, but a well placed shot beats all other characteristics hands down regardless of what ammo your using. I've seen a .22 jelly a brain and I've seen bucks run for hours after being hit with a .50 cal from a muzzle loader. IMHO it's all target aquisition and bullet placement, not bullet size or velocity.
