What I have learned, week one.

My first week as an SKS owner.~~~~~

Generally very satisfied.

I once again realize I don't get enough range time.

I like the price of ammo. Iv'e been buying a "sealed brick" of 120 rounds 123gn HP. Says on the box- "made to hunting specifications, Made in Russia. Not really sure who makes it. there are some other markings on the box. Still want to try the S&B, Wolf, Silver Bear and any other I can get.

Putting the trigger assembly back in can be a bear, until you learn to hold your tounge the right way

I hate cosmoline. Actually, this crap looks like bearing grease to me.

Only one small headache; When the bolt carrier locks up, it nicks the piston extension on the left outside a bit. Any recomendations?

I'm going to re- do the stock. I'm no Stock Doc, but I've turned out a couple of good ones with the Tru-Oil kit. I just can't do the dipped varnish look.

Still haven't shot my Yugo yet, still cleaning the gunk off it. Rifle ranges are sparse around here and their outside...19 degrees right now...think I'll wait!

Ya just gotta love that gunk, though. I smells so gritty and splendid and delightfully man inspiring. I just handled a gunk covered SKS about 4 hours ago, and I still refuse to wash my hands.....until the wife makes me.

Of course, the locker room used to stink, you know. But, once you are far too old to have use for one, it doesn't seem to stink so bad. So, let us enjoy the gunk as we should have enjoyed the youthful, vigorous stink of the locker room while it was ours to behold.

NRAJOE,

You fired that SKS yet?
I have need of your advice on the SKS experience. I have the itch, but do not yet know if it is worth the lasting marital glare that it will certainly bring.

Thanks Jerry, for your SKS impressions. You folks are helping me fall off the wagon again.

Jerry,

In all the times I've shot my SKS I've never had a bolt seize....never heard of it from anyone else until now. So, I have no idea just what you're talking about on that issue.

I do know I have not had a jam one with mine, or at least I can't remember having one.

The only problem I can truthfully remember is a severe gas piston fouling once when I was usin some no-named ammo. The Wolf seems to work fine in mine but it, too, is dirty ammo.

The trigger group, and the magazine, can be a pain in the buttinski to get back in sometimes. I found the stock diffifult to take off too but with some patience it happens.

I scoped my SKS, and although no SKS will be a tack driving sniper weapon, mine can get respectable four inch groups at 100 yards. Hence, it's slated as one of my BO guns if the need ever arises.

SKS's are fun and cheap to shoot. Have fun when the weather warms up, dude....yepper...fer sure.

Talking

James, sometimes the marital glare can be offset by letting the little woman shoot it - they usually understand the draw then. The risk with that is the possibility she'll claim it for her own, and you have to buy another one . . . heck, go for it!

As to that cosmolene, just buy a case of brake-cleaner.
(You guys know about the toxic effect of cosmo, right? The KGB put a drug in it that get's into your bloodstream, and makes you buy more and more old milsurp guns! That's why we're all addicted - it's incurable, but controllable by occasionally buying another old military rifle.)

Thanks for the specific reply Dale. I misspoke a bit when the bolt locks up (goes into battery) the top bolt carrier nicks the side of the gas extension tube a bit. Seems not to be too big a deal. I did notice the bolt carrier group has a bit of side to side "play" The gun shoots ok and does not malfunction.

May I also add, some don't like the short stock. I don't mind it. I can get my nose right up to the back of the weapon action somewhat like the M-16. Also, my first gun was an A-5 I loved the 'ole humpback, The SKS profile reminds me of that A-5

My wifes parents do have 50 acres in N.E Ohio, don't see them very often but it would be worth it just to shoot my SKS..."Hi mom, hi dad, yelp, gonna go in your woods now...see ya later"!

Try Big Dog's approach. Let Mom shoot the SKS....
You know, call up the wife's parents and tell them how much you miss them and that you want to bring their daughter home for a visit. After you've been there a good while (3.5 seconds or so) offer to show Mom that cute rifle in the trunk. Don't take any ammo with you. That would be too obvious; besides, you will then have an excuse to run out and buy a few thousand rounds.

Happy shooting !
