Well the rustaphobic in me couldn't take the whispering iron from the safe today, so i took the yugo out, cleaned the snot out of every single piece of the gas op system till it gleamed, THEN the big no no [so I'm told] i wiped EVERY piece down with remoil wipes. We shall see if it turns to a black goop and FTF. I can still hear it, but its happy.

i've never really used the rem wipes too much, i used one once in afghanistan cause my buddy had one for me but i cleaned my rifle so much that it got cleaned the next day with clp

I have never used Rem oil wipes but have wiped down all parts of my SKS s and all my guns with oily rags and never had a problem with them gunking up. the high humidity salt air down here makes that a necessity or the rust will gunk it up for sure.

I wasn't concerned about the remoil just the no lube in the gas system, but I've read so many horror stories on rusty corroded fouled seized SKS gas system parts i thot alittle lube can't be as bad. Mine was good, a little carbon no rust or pitting but i could see the start of alittle grung glomming on to the cover just behind the piston. As for the Remoil, Remington makes it in wipes and pump spray, if i remember rite it's a new "oil" that displaces moisture better and protects longer by recoating say fingerprints over and over without rewiping.

So its bad to oil the gas tube on your sks? Hmm. I must of oiled mine a year ago and havent fired it since. In what way is it bad for it?

The gases contain the crud or grime or whatever you want to call it from the powder and the oil or lube will collect all that in your gas system. The main reason they say NOT to oil or lube the gas, any gas system...After a while it'll get all gummed up and it won't operate and or fire properly.

If you're concerned about it just get yourself a spray can of degreaser, take it apart and spray it down and most will evaporate. Then just wipe it down with a clean dry cloth.

Well obviously. But why would you want to do anything that would cause it to malfunction to begin with?

Why not just do as one should and keep it clean and dry and not have to worry about it? lol

And I guess the main point is, why would you want to oil/lube the gas system which is what makes the rifle cycle?

More importantly, why develop a bad habit or habits to begin with???

I use several different cleaning and lube products depending onthe uniqueindividual aspects of the gun. I have had good luck with hoppes elite on some areas of some guns. I use it on the gas system of my M1, Yugo sks and gas piston area of my Sx2 shotgun. I do believe it does what it says after repeticious cleaning. The carbon does seem to come off easier after repeated cleanings with hoppes elite cleaner. Please note, I am not lubricating the components. I am cleaning with a product that advertises that it conditions the metal to make subsequesnt claeanings easier. it does not work the first go around, but seems to help as time and usage goes by.

Well I had a wierd malfunction yesterday at the range. My tapco mags would every few rounds just stop feeding. Like the bolt wasn't catching the rim of the cartridge and would close on an empty chamber. Confirms my want in a stock mag and stripper clips.

You really want to clean the tube and piston, coat with oil, and then thoroughly dry it. Oil will hold contaminates and it will act as a grit causing faster wear.
Arch the short recoil could have several causes...in that you are 'losing gas'.
Poor fit of the gas tube and piston, or wear to the same.
Bolt dragging on magazine.
Rifle needs cleaning and lube...
Low powered ammo

It was all Wolf Mil Classic and thats all I've used before. The gastube fits nicely the only thing I can think of is I need to figure out a way to clean the gasport and the short bit of tube from the gasport. The gastube that goes through the hand guard is fine I cleaned that a few months ago and haven't shot since until yesterday. What I really need to do is sit down and clean the guns one afternoon and really scrub at stuff with shooter's choice.
