I have had my SKS for a little over a year now and it came with a piccatiny rail on the bolt cover. It makes it a little harder to use the iron sights and it is impossible to see anything when the irons are set for 400yds and above. I figured I could just use the base to put a red dot on! The bolt cover is actually pretty sturdy and it doesn't wiggle or move at all, so I think it could work relatively well with a red dot.
Any suggestions for something in the $100 price range? I am looking at about 300yds for a maximum distance but I could always try to shoot further just for kicks out at the range. It probably wont be used for hunting, just range use and probably SHTF gun. hahaha!

You're going to be disappointed on two fronts here: the bolt-cover optic mount on an SKS is a terrible idea, it's not a stable platform and you will be adjusting your optic constantly due to this design flaw. Two: you're not going to find a decent red-dot scope for around $100....I've tried and the quality just isn't there. Sure, they may LOOK like an EOTech or Trijicon ACOG but trust me, they suck. If you must use an optic on your SKS try finding a kit to mount it in place of the rear sight, and save your money and buy a good ($360 and up) sight.

If you must, go with a Bushnell Trophy series. That being said, I would try to get a standard bolt cover and if you must have an optic on your SKS, get a Mosin PU style mount with the 1" rings and have the receiver drilled/tapped for that and cut the stock. Those are going to be the best mounts for an SKS IMHO. I'd go with a 4x fixed power scope for an SKS. Maybe a Romanian PSO scope. Centerfire Systems is selling the PSO alone for $100.

^ I have one of those as well that I'm not using now. I switched over to a peep sight. Decided my SKS wasn't going to be a red dot firearm, so I don't use the scout mount anymore. When I did have it, however, it was always 100% and their claim of returning to zero is completely accurate as far as I could tell.
I have had a cheap Simmons red dot on a bolt cover a while back. The bolt cover, no matter the design, will not be accurate for many shots. My bolt cover with scope mount had 4 screws that kept it very tight to the receiver, and I used a few drops of purple locktite to hopefully keep things stable. It worked a bit, but really is not the best solution. If you are serious about scoping your SKS, find the scope mount that needs to be drilled and tapped on the side of the receiver, like a true mauser or mosin scope mount. These are not too common. Perhaps you could rig an AK47 scope mount bar to the side.
Yes... that is the scope mount style I was referring to. I am not sure if one could mount an AK scope rail on the SKS without much effort, but that might make the SKS look a bit better, as the entire scope and mount would be able to be removed easily for maintenance. Also, it would be easily removed in the field if the scope was damaged. If you do not plan to take your SKS into combat with the fear of optics failure, then the Choate mount would work great.
