hunting in the summer

I noticed that most hunting occurs either in the Fall or Winter and was wondering why this is? I wanted to do some clearing out of squirrel come the Summer and have my son help me when there isn't 2 feet of snow on the ground. Is it unhealthy to kill and eat say squirrel in the summer?

You'll have to check your local hunting laws to see when seasons are in in your area. As far as being safe to eat you'll wanna watch out for warbles.

Here it's to do with the breeding season. The only "big" game we can hunt all year round are wildboar up to 1yr old. Pest control laws can be used for hunting fox's, badgers etc, if they cause damage or hygein problems in an area you farm or raise livstock.

Our hunting season starts in early august 16th then through till jan 31st.

Squirrel season is in the fall in most states. if you get caught hunting out of season you will likely face fines, lose your gun, and maybe your license. Which is why most people hunt when the game is in season . If you want some fun hunting in the summers groundhogs can be a blast to hunt. And as far as I know are in season year round about everywhere.

Varmint hunting in some states is year round in several states so check to see in your state. For us varmint includes coyote, jack rabbit and a few others. I don't usually hunt in the summer here as it is way to hot. when I lived in Northern NV or in other northen states I pretty much hunted varmint year round. During the winter months is the best time to hunt varmint if you are looking to keep or sell the pelts.

When I lived in Missouri, the squirrel season started in May and ran until Thanksgiving. I used to go hunting early in the AM with a friend before going to school in May. We hunted and ate squirrels all through the summer. (the young ones were a little small but very tender)

I agree, I only want to hunt when what ever I am hunting is in season. I will have to check my local regs. I more was wondering why most hunting seasons are in the fall and winter and not much that I know of in the summer. I was wondering if it was due to hunting in the summer was not healthy for one reason or another. I must have to go hunting for squirrel or rabbitt soon while they may be in season.

In Indiana you can hunt Goundhogs all year round, its best in early June after the soybeans have come up , but not too tall as to hide them, they love to eat tender young beans!!!!

Hunting seasons are set up around breeding seasons for the most part. In OK the young squirrels (for example) are on thier own by may 15th. That is when we start killing and eating them!
