I tried to lilve and let live for a while, but within a week after we moved in the critters had chewed a hole through the roof and were moving in. I took out the first one with my .22 . He was on the roof and the shell casing landed right in front of another one on the ground. He just looked at me like "Whatcha doin' dude?". I started yelling at them "Don't you get it! You're supposed to RUN!" and emptied the magazine. I realized then that this was going to be an ongoing thing, so I got the pellet gun to keep the neighbors happier.

Its great to finally find an active Squirrel hunting site!I am sure that as most of you Squirrel Hunters know,it is not easy to do. I also am an avid Squirrel hunter and am from west central Indiana. My weapons of choice are a 17 mach 2 and a .22.I have shot Squirrels with all weapons including Bow and Black powder. They are my favorite small game table fare and as I write this I have a young one slow frying which will be followed by bisquits and gravy. What a great game animal to harvest and eat. The season here came in August 15th and will remain in until January 31st.The nut mast here is good but scattered in some areas but the hunting is good.We have had 2 decent masts in the last couple years and the population is decent. They are cutting the mockernut, pig and shagbark hickorys heavy at this time.I have only been out 3 times to date because of my work schedule but have done well.I hope everyone else's season is is going well also. I will be checking this site to see how the hunting is going in other parts of the country and wish everyone good luck. Scotty |

Here in south LA there is always water, nuts and for sure squirrels. You can hunt them anywhere. I espcially like the big fox, and black squirrels. You walk out of the woods with 8 of those, you've done something.

It sounds like LA is a great state for a Squirrel hunter to live in.Lots of nuts, lots of squirrels and a very liberal bag limit.Bet you have a ball down there chasing bushytails. What are some off your favorite nut trees down there?

| Fox squirrels are so rare in SC I would not shoot one here. I usually stand there in amazement when I am privelidged to see one. Gray squirrels are plentiful and just last season I got into hunting them with 22LR semiauto pistols with reddots.

Now about 1/2 hr after first azure light of dawn, the squirrel bark and fuss all over ground and canopy. A great way to get back into stealthy gliding through the woods, keep cover in mind, using calls and bag some choice menu! Yes tomatos are a juicy ingredient think stew! The hot summer went by just hiking with short or collapsible fishing poles visiting those secret out of the way thorn protected ponds. Now the fresh cool air, deep blue skies beckon.

| For Sure!
For sure I hunt squirrel! And, for a number of reasons. One, as has already been mentioned by one poster, squirrel hunting encompasses just about every aspect of what hunting is. You can stalk 'em (which isn't as nearly as easy as one might think.) Or, you can scout about until you find a spot where squirrels feed, then sneak in and sit, waiting for them to come you. Also, you can just walk through likely squirrel habitat kicking things up a bit perhaps to connect on a running, jumping, climbing or scampering shot. As a bonus, up here in NH squirrel hunting is viewed for the most part as something done by a beginning hunter. Relatively few hunters actively hunt squirrel. Chances of running into another squirrel hunter are slim indeed. For over 20 years I spent nearly all the small game season, which is overlapped by archery deer season, bowhunting for deer, while only infrequently opting to hunt squirrels. (I have hunted squirrels with the bow as well.) This year however, I have left the bow on the pegs, refraining from bowhunting deer altogether, to concentrate on hunting squirrels. And, I don't regret doing so one bit! I'm having a great time doing what I'm doing. And, pleasently enough, I've seen plenty of deer. Deer that I will be back gunning for once the muzzleloader season opens Nov. 3rd. Just this morning (after my boss cleared me to go into work late, making up my time later into the afternoon) I bagged myself a couple of nice Grays and had two bucks walk right on past me as I sat back against a tree having just dressed the first kill. Moreover, later as I was heading back out to home, I had an eyeball-to-eyeball encounter with the biggest Barred Owl I've ever seen. It couldn't have been twenty feet from me and not 5ft up a tree when I step over a stonewall and there it was. We just looked at one another. It was a beautiful sight indeed. It didn't spook in the least. We just eyeballed each other for awhile, and then after saying good-morning, I just went on my way. It was a very good morning, indeed. So yeah, I hunt squirrels - they being the fun, tasty, little critters they are! Last edited by NHmsj; 09-26-2007 at 04:45 PM. |
