AH,

My Mossberg .410 was a three shot internal magazine type.

One day some of my buddies said they were going "Trap-Shooting" and said I could come along if I had a shotgun.

I said, yup, I have a shotgun. When we met at their shooting site they all produced expensive Pump and autoloader 12 gauge shotguns and had a good laugh at my puny little .410.

They allowed me to try hitting a flying ceramic "Cow-Patty" thrown from a hand trap.

Well, I hit it. As a matter of fact I hit every one they threw. Then they started throwing up two at a time in a crossing pattern. I would hit the first one and then work the bolt and hit the second one.

At the end of the shooting session all the expensive 12 gauge shotguns were leaning against a car while all the guys were taking turns with my little .410.

Mossberg gained a lot of respect that day, as did the .410 size.

Early in the season I use my 11-48 12 ga.because of all the leaves still on the trees, then as the trees get more bare and the squirrels spend more time on the ground I use my marlin 60.

Mossberg 500 using target load (cheap), easy to pick out under tough skin. Experimenting with laser dot sight on same gun. Intend to practice on squirrel for upcoming Fall Turkey season plan to use #5 shot. I like the extra kick and assume it means more distance and power. I only shoot squirrels that rendezvous with grill, pot or skillet later.. Some do get a death grip on high branches or fall into large hollows in old trees. Squirrel... a good treat through the season, recipes are endless. Happy hunting, bon apetit!

20ga NEF single shot shotgun or .410 NEF single shot shotgun. I'd prefer to use my Marlin 880 .22LR, and have done so when the conditions premit it. However, living in a fairly populated and continually growing part of Southern NH, I am more and more reluctant to take overhead shots with that rifle. So, now I find myself almost always heading out into the woods with either the 20ga. or .410. Hate spitting out lead shot during a meal, however. Even after deboning, I sometimes come up with one or two shot on my plate! Not fun! Read an article recently where going for head shots using the outer edge of the pattern reduces shot damage. Takes some skill doing so, knowing your gun's pattern and knowing how far to hold off target at varying ranges. Oh, but did I say how much I hate having lead shot in my food?! Nonetheless, I love squirrel hunting much more. I just chew lightly and cautiously.

Mostly what ever I am carrying. The old iron site .22 marlin I rescued from my dad's old house dose a good job. Shoot a few with my .17hmr and the 12 gauge on occasion. I had been shooting them with .22 in the yard as they kept getting into the "squirrel proof" bird feeder. the wife caught me apperently she likes the squirrels more then the birds. tried the .17 pellet gun so she wouldnt hear, that dosen't work as well at all and the ethics of the whole thing made me stop that.

So far this season, I've used my 870 with #6 & #8, and my Savage .22 Bolt. Both've worked pretty well. I went hunting with my buddy last weekend, and he was using a 20GA 1100 Auto, and scared half the squrrels away. It's always funny to see someone empty a full tube into the trees and get nothing. The Savage is unusually accurate for Savage Arms, but I might need to upgrade from the stock scope sometime.
