In western PA we have primarily gray squirrels and chipmunks, with red squirrels less common and fox squirrels once in a while. Groundhogs are also technically a ground squirrel.

The most peculiar ones we have are a special gene pool of gray squirrels that are all black. They usually are found in specific communities. Pittsburgh has a neighborhood called "Squirrel Hill" where they can be found regularly.

NH Squirrels

As in Maine, we here in NH have both the Gray and the Red Squirrel. Hunting season for the Gray opend Sept. 1st this year. Again as in Maine, there is no closed season on Reds. Fortunately, Reds are tasty enough, even though it takes a couple, three to make a meal. Unfortunately, however, over the years Reds have expanded throughout much of Southern NH, where I live, reducing the population of Grays. (Or at least, the population of Grays has declined for some reason and the Reds are just filling in the gap.) Curiously, Reds do tend to beat up on Grays. I have often witnessed Reds confronting and chasing off Grays. It's odd that such happens. Grays run about twice the size of Reds but just don't seem to have the same spunk. I prefer bagging a Gray, of course, but as mentioned, Reds are tasty enough.

"Curiously, Reds do tend to beat up on Grays."

Odd, over in Merry Olde England, they have the reverse problem. The introduced Yank Grey Squirrels are beating up on their indigenous Reds. Those American bullies . . .

Undoubtedly, English Reds are much more sophisticated and "genteel" than our Yankee Reds, and find it beneath themselves to engage in boorish confrontations with invading U.S. Gray thugs. Moreover, I would suspect that the British Greys are none to jolly about having foreigners beating up on their cousins - doing what they, themselves, simply aren‘t up to doing!

They'd better hope they don't get invaded by BRG's "Squirrels from de 'hood" . . .

There was a news story a couple years back from Moscow, Russia. A large dog was barking at some squirrels in a park during a harsh Russian winter. The starving squirrels attacked, killed and were beginning to EAT the dog! Whoowee - hope those rodents stay over there!

We have 4 species of tree squirrels in Wisconsin, gray, fox, red(pine), and flying squirrels. Flying squirrels are protected.
