hey guys!! i just found this site while doing some research on a 38 revolver my father purchased and i knew i found the right people to ask. i am trying to repair it and i am not 100% sure what it is. here's what i have: 38 S&W special CTG. on the barrel, 4" barrel, square butt, fixed sights. serial # C113XXX. it has a problem with the hand not revolving the cylinder and numrich has a lot of different models to choose from. i would really appreciate your help. thank you
Welcome to the Forum, taurus45. We have folks here who can answer your questions. Photographs would help a lot. I suggest you rub the markings on the barrel and the crane with chalk to make them more visible.
From the sound of it, you have a S&W Model 10 of some sort, your basic police patrolman's revolver from the period before the rise of the wondernines. If I'm understanding what you wrote correctly, you're saying that you cannot rotate the cylinder by hand at all? Presuming the gun isn't a big pile of rust, which I'm sure it isn't, it sounds like you have a cartridge fouling the barrel. It's something you see with the Taurus Judge when someone puts a 3 inch shotshell into a 2 1/2" chamber. The 3 inch shell will fit, all right. It will even fire. But when the shell crimp opens into the barrel, it jams the cylinder. Fixing it is a job for a gunsmith.
You may have a similar problem. Either that, or the pistol is out of timing. That's definitely a gunsmith repair job.
However, I'll defer to our resident gunsmiths, Mooseman and Seabeescotty and our S&W experts. I'd like to know what the score is with this pistol, myself.

Hello taurus45
Your revolver is a fixed sighted medium size Square K-Frame S&W M&P Model. It could be a model 10, 11, or 12. They all have the same internal Components and it is from 1948 time span according to your serial number. It is also called a Pre-10, Pre-11 or Pre-12 as they did not start stamping model numbers in them until 1957 time span. In Looking at what Numerich has to offer for your gun in a cylinder hand they offer three of them. The over sized hand is sold out. They also offer a Three pin hand and a Two Pin hand which I am willing to bet is what your gun has in it. You will need to take the gun apart and see if yours is a three pin or Two pin hand before ordering a new one. The Pins will be on the bottom of the hand when you take it apart be careful not to loose the small hand return spring which keeps it Pre-Loaded in the forward position, and this spring is located inside the gun's trigger. Here is a Schematic to your gun and the hand parts start at number 72. I hope this help's, Hammerdown
Thanks Cyrano and Hammer Down, glad to be here. I didn't see a thread to introduce myself, otherwise I would have. I was surprised I was able to post a thread. I have it disassembled and the schematic is really helpful. I was unsure if it was classified as the M&P, K, L or J-frame. I also took pictures of the hand, but they didn't come out right. By looking at the schematic, I can see the Hand Pin, #73, is broken on mine. Preventing the Hand from having forward tension it requires to turn the cylinder. Thanks for clarifying the specific model.

I can see there are two pins on the Hand. The broken one is the smaller of the two.
Once you get a new one, you need to put the trigger, gently, in a vise. Take a small, flat screwdriver and hold the hand spring forward while you put the hand in. The long leg of the spring will face straight up and the short leg will be in a slot. It may take a few times, but the hand has to have tension on it so it will engage the ratchets on the back of the cylinder.

Hello
Yup, That's an M&P revolver you have there. In Placing that new hand, I would simply turn the trigger over in my hand, and use a flat tooth pick to Pre-Load it. It is a little hard to see down in there, but it can be done if you are patient, and start the Pins into the trigger slowly. I would not suggest using a vice as it may mess up the case color finish of the trigger. When you re-assemble the internals be carefull placing the rebound slide asembly back into Place as it's spring has quit a bit of pressure on it.I use a small flat screwdriver for that to get it down behind the frame pin. be sure to get the round engagement pin from the trigger back in place into the end of the rebound slide assembly as well. Good Liuck, Keep us posted.. Hammerdown

Guys, thank you so much for your help. I was just so unsure of what it was, exactly. I know it will take some time to fix and get it looking nice again, but I am fine with that. I thought about re-bluing it. What do you think? That is also something I have no experience with. But, I am confident that I will figure it out.
