problem with new SW40VE

I recently purchase a S&W Sigma 40VE.
After about 100 rouns fired with no problems, I attempted to remove the
slide. The slide would only go forward
about 1/2 inch passed the frame. Also,
the pin behind the slide release levers
(holding the trigger mechanism?) was
protruding out to the left. I don't
know if this happened during shooting
or when I attempted to remove the slide: I pulled it free to avoid losing it.
S&W has repaired the gun (no explan-
ation) and returned it. Plan on trying it
out this weekend. Could I have possibly
done something wrong (thought about
using a hammer, but no.) Any similar
experiences or ideas would be welcomed
