Price on 686

My local pawn dealer has a beautiful stainless 686 with the hogue rubber grips. Gun looks to be mint. The only thing i noticed is the hammer looks alittle discolored. Seemed to function perfecly. I don't know much about the smith's but I did notice it had the firing pin on the hammer. It's the 4" version and he's aksing 425.00 I know he will take 400.00 but i believe i can get him down to 350-375 range. Would that be a buy??

375-400 would be about fair...if in 98% shape...300 if in 95% shape is Blue book value...

Thanks Rich, I think 350 is going to be my top dollar. I don't have to have it, but i have been looking for a 4" SS revolver. Right now it's between the smith, ruger, and a colt king cobra "or python if somebody goes stupid and sells one for dirt cheap."

I have a 6" S&W that i love. but the 6" is alittle more barrel than i like.

Yea, pawn shops are like any other retailer. They love to mark things way up. Especially if they think they'll get it. And pawn shops usually mark things up like 500%. If you get it, post a picture or 2.

Is there a black book for guns. I wonder about how much the pawn dealer gave for the gun??? Said a old lady brought it in and that it was her deceased husbands.

There isn't a "black book" for gun values but there is a "Blue book of gun values" for them. I think currently, they're on the 28th edition? If he's asking $425, I'd guess he gave her maybe $150-250? They usually try to double what they gave for it. Make 100% or more profit. If people are foolish enough, they can get 200% back.

I have a 686 SS 6" barrel I bought new about 24 years and many thousand rounds ago. Still looks great (I clean it a lot!) and NEVER a problem!
Pawn shops around here tend to be high. Any gun shops in the area that sell used guns? Maybe let your fingers do the walking in the yellow pages. A few minutes on the phone might save some $$$. Might also tell you it's a good deal.

Keep us informed!
